This is a newer piece from last year that I am really proud to own. Paul Kaiju is obviously a sofubi OG and he has always been one of my biggest inspirations, and this is the first piece of his that I’ve been able to own so it means a lot. Now that Mark Nagata is retiring from MaxToyCo, I feel even more grateful to have this Drazoran in my collection. I always appreciated MaxToyCo for making really cool vintage style, licensed toys, and for making them accessible to everyone. No crazy prices, no lotteries, just love for the toys and culture. A long time ago I saw a bright yellow Marusan mecha-Godzilla at ToyTokyo in New York, and I was super sad to have to pass it up. Then I came across this other Marusan mecha-Godzilla more recently, and with this cool metallic spray, I knew I had to have it. Another one of my early pieces, this is a Bullmark repro of a Garamon figure and I think it glows in the dark? My wife surprised me with tickets to Five Points Festival for my birthday one year. It was my first real toy/sofubi show, and when we got there I was so overwhelmed I couldn’t get sofubi into my bag fast enough, this was one of the pieces I picked up. Starting at the beginning, this is the first sofubi piece I ever bought. It’s a little clear blue Gomess kaiju with silver accents from Gargamel!
Back then I barely knew what sofubi was, let alone how to get my hands on it. BUT there was one single shelf at this comic store in South Florida called Tate’s that had a few small pieces. Probably one person’s tiny collection that they bought in bulk.
