Rooted in critical heritage studies and ecofeminism, Moniek’s practice explores how water carries imaginations and connects lifeworlds. Together, Giga and Moniek discuss the violent friction of infrastructure projects that use “history” as an alibi for extraction—from the “Silk Road” to the “Maya Train”—and ask a crucial question: What does design look like when it refuses the urge to “solve,” and instead becomes a tool of resistance and radical care? The archive is a magical place where time layers never intersect by coincidence. Rediscovering Andro Chiaureli’s 1989 documentary The Wound while researching Chiatura’s eco-socio-affective landscape was one such guiding sign for our inquiry. Soviet cinema framed Chiatura’s manganese mining through propaganda. The Wound shatters this, juxtaposing cold official denials of socio-ecological damage with unheard local voices and the city’s unembellished reality. It lays bare an open wound of Soviet modernism that, 37 years later, still bleeds. In collaboration with the director and Giorgi Kakabadze, Director of the Central Archive of Audio-Visual Documents, we digitised the original film roll, laying the foundation for a dedicated Andro Chiaureli Fonds at the @nationalarchivesgeorgia . Watching The Wound today is haunting; the 1989 officials’ rhetoric, masking socio-ecological damage with false promises, perfectly mirrors our reality today. Watch the film via the link in our bio. On November 26, we presented the first phase of our research, “Affective Geologies: Archive of Chiatura’s Wounds,” alongside the Dineba Archive launch. Our archival flow focused on Chiatura, one of the most vulnerable landscapes in the Imereti. As a site of rapid manganese extraction, Chiatura became subject to wild exploitation, colonisation, and the instrumentalisation of both labourers and nature. We use the notion of the “wound” beyond a metaphor for damage, as an entry point to investigate the entanglement of geological processes, extractivist logic, and human experience. A wound is not just damage; it is a site where violence inscribes itself onto the physical world. It is undeniable evidence. By bringing this material dimension back into the research, we make visible the physical weight of abstract, often-invisible dominant systems. Over two days of collective speculation, we followed a camel caravan through the river Mtkvari’s parched bed; inhabited the perspective of a stray dog; read an architect-crow’s thoughts on a subterranean city; and joined an anonymous forum where poets, longing to become echoes, tell stories about the routes carved by crabs. These stories revealed spaces of coexistence, constantly shaped and reshaped by the entanglement of human and more-than-human life. Deepest gratitude to all twelve participants. Using the method of collaborative storytelling, the workshop aims to speculate on alternative futures. Employing a unique deck of illustrated cards depicting diverse agents—creatures, objects, phenomena, and materials—we weave stories that uncover unexpected relations, overlooked tensions, and hidden possibilities. The process is designed to challenge pre-written futures dictated by systems of power, cultivating instead a shared space where multiple worldviews are respected, reimagined, and remembered. Within the context of the “Writing-Reading Laboratory”, we explored an unstable future defined by “The Trembling”, from the writer’s perspective; the stories created in the workshop will now become a part of the project’s growing archive. Excited to introduce the first iteration of our new project “[Un]Common Threads” in collaboration with @forecast_platform . Join us on 15th March at 6:00 pm at Radialsystem for a collaborative storytelling workshop as part of Forecast Festival 9! This workshop invites you to speculate on alternative futures through collaborative storytelling. Employing illustrated cards depicting diverse agents—creatures, objects, and materials—you will weave narratives that explore a speculative future framework defined in relation to the specific thematic context of each workshop iteration. While the cards act as mediums of imagination, they also serve as metaphors or key elements within the realities you construct. Hopefully, they will inspire you to uncover unexpected relations, overlooked tensions, and hidden possibilities—and to reimagine a more-than-human matrix beyond the human-centric constraints of the present. Through this process, the workshop engages with the discourse on decolonising the imaginative dimension of the future from systems created by those in power—systems that have long dictated what is deemed plausible. Instead, it cultivates a shared resource of (un)common perspectives, where multiple worldviews are respected, reimagined, and remembered. Given its flexibility to adapt to diverse thematic contexts, the project will gather a range of perspectives into a growing archive of imagined futures.
