Thinking about other women tonight. Just hoping every one of you is safe and well, but knowing thatās probably not true. Iām thinking about Sarah Everard and Oluwatoyin Salau and Karina Vetrano and so many more. And how unfair and dangerous the world can be to women.
I chose this photo for this piece not only because it matched the tone of what I wanted to create, but because I was fucking terrified when I shot it.
I had ventured pretty deep into a trail in the headlands and had a profound realization that I was alone and that something didnāt feel right. So I got on the phone with my friend (in case something happened) and made my way back to a more public space.
And itās ridiculous because nothing was probably there. But weāre conditioned to feel terrified because weāre vulnerable. I grew up in an area where women were assaulted and murdered on paths that werenāt much different than the one I was shooting in.
And I was fine that time. I made it home. I follow my weird little rules. Be aware of your surroundings. Try to shoot with a buddy. No headphones at night (or when shooting alone). Cross the street if you feel uncomfortable. Donāt take drinks from strangers. Only walk the dog on my block if itās late. Get on the phone if youāre spooked. Pretend to be on the phone if itās dead. Share your location I definitely with a few people.
Those women probably had the same rules.
IāveĀ wanted to play with AR for years but never felt like I had the tools or knowledge to get into it. Then @spectacles asked me to partner on a collaboration and I had the push I finally needed to dive in. They sent me these neat sunglasses with two cameras on each side that allow me to create 3D videos (and feel like a cool spy while doing it). I was able to create my own AR filters (shout out to all the lens studio tutorials) and use the Spectacles 3D video capabilities to bring my recent fascination with frisson to life. #snapspectacles
IĀ recently partnered with @spectacles to explore harnessing AR in my work. After a year of creative hibernation/barely leaving my living room, this winter trip to the beach was such a surreal experience. This project reminded me why I got into digital manipulation in the first place. I really like puzzles, and this project tickled that part of my brain. Because spectacles shoot 3D video, they create a depth map that measures whether a dynamically generated object (my orbs) collide with a surface. This gave me a lot of opportunity to play with how my orbs interact with landscapes and portraits. Not only was I challenged with using this new tool, but as an photographer that primarily shoots natural landscapes, I had to rediscover the pockets of nature that are tucked away in this city.Ā #SnapSpectacles
