“CULTURE SHOCK” Resized and reimagined for instagram. For ROOTED Exhibition: About a month ago, CULTURE SHOCK was featured at the Rooted Virtual Exhibition by Ogilvy UK & Mediacom in London towards the celebration and recognition of Black History Month UK. CULTURE SHOCK explores the assorted fabric of humanity within black culture woven around time periods in pop culture. The black culture is widely perceived to be a 'shock culture' - one that is ever-evolving and never-stale in all explosive directions, sometimes oblivious to the very people of the culture themselves. “Upon being captivated by the beauty of the art displayed at his workshop, a student remarks, “I have a ton of different interests, and I don’t have focus.” William Morris, the renowned glassblower, looks at her and replies: “You’ll never be sure. You don’t want to be sure.”” As a student of art, I share similar sentiments. What began as artistic expressions inspired by life, colours, and shapes, created out of boredom in my bedroom at 2AM during the height of the pandemic, has now taken flight into spaces I never imagined. This year, I decided to take a break from illustrating to focus on my career in film, but I’m increasingly convinced that I don’t need to settle into one medium - the works keep opening doors in my absence. My digital illustration, “Trampoline”, created in May 2020, found its way into London Fashion Week this year, in a format and size I never imagined possible—thanks to @shemaiah.gold . These moments are precious and deeply motivating. This feature was made possible by Area Noir Gallery @areanoir towards its upcoming art pop-up in London from 19-22 Dec 2022, also featuring some of my L.E. prints. The idea is simply to carry on with playfulness beyond achievement - almost deforming the very evidence of accomplishment through the meticulous art of “digital” origami, into a dog. #wisilmitty #origami #art

What started out as an attempt to create art out of boredom one night during the height of ‘the’ pandemic in 2020 has shockingly paid off. I have had the honour to have my work displayed at 2 grand exhibitions, been invited onto art panels alongside virtuoso artists, been offered book features and had my first ever Instagram live all because of art - a leap of faith more than worth it. It’s been such an amazing year with lots of hard lessons and fun about the art world. These are artworks by Wisil Mitty and co. sold in 2021.
