@talk2spirit Trauma affects the brain in profound, long-term ways. Most of the time, we know the painful memories we carry with us as consequences of bad choices, family secrets, past abuse, heartaches, disappointments and other life shaping events, but we don't recognize the ways in which the trauma we've suffered, or inherited, physically affects the body until it is treated and healed.
Trauma affects the brain the same way physical injuries affect other parts of the body. Not only can trauma alter your brain chemistry and distort the ways in which you see and respond to the world around (and within) you, but it can physically change the actual parts of your brain that control emotions, memories, memory, learning, executive functioning, higher level thinking, fear based responses and reasoning.
Not healing psychological trauma would be like breaking your leg as a kid, never seeing a doctor/getting treatment and trying to walk/run/move throughout life with all the demands required like everything is okay. It's impossible. But, because the wounds are seen (as behaviors), but are not understood as symptoms of unhealed trauma, the illness is invisible while the victim and everyone they interact with suffer the consequences of the sickness.
The ways in which your untreated trauma has affected & is affecting your life is likely profound and you don't even know it. The ways it's affecting your partner, child(ren), friends, finances, ambition, motivation... your ENTIRE life is in ways in which you don't deserve to continuing suffering. But, no one can save you from except yourself at this point. If you're not sure how to begin healing, consider meeting with a Therapist who specializes in trauma focused therapy. In 2022, healing is the greatest gift we can give to ourselves and the world we are constantly creating.
