Work In Process

PSA, your last day to drop off processing orders will be Tuesday the 25th of July, and next week will be the last week our darkrooms are available for hire. What! I'm not crying, you are! 😭 Also, come get your negatives otherwise they're getting shredded on the 29th.

Very big news. This week marks the 5th birthday of Work In Process, and with the same breath, it will also be the last. Yes, the rumours are true! As of the end of July, our processer will develop its last films with us. All good things must come to an end, right? What a wild ride this venture has been. From the humble days of the Northcote store, going through covid, seeking an interim workspace afterwards and then onto our current lab, gallery and darkroom spaces. From the response of our customers already in the loop, WIP is going to be sorely missed; and we're really going to miss you too! The biggest thank you from all of us in here for trusting us with your precious films and keeping us doing the thing we love to do. It's onto the next chapter of our lives. Thank you for sharing with us the last half decade. ❤️ Ps. Please collect your negatives before we close, we'll finally be disposing of them 1st August.

Holiday Break! Wow that came around fast... Our closure times over the Christmas and new year period are: Last day for order drop off to recieve files back before the end of the year is next Tuesday 20th December. After this date anything dropped off will go in line for 2023. We'll be reopening on the 10th January; lab, darkrooms and workshops. Our 24/7 order drop off will be continued through this off period. This Friday evening come along and help us welcome in our new gallery exhibit from local photographer @karl_halliday Artist statement About Time is a solo exhibition by Naarm-based artist Karl Halliday. Featuring a selection of works produced between 2018 and 2022, the exhibition presents a cross-section of the artist's investigation into the biographical dimension of vision as expressed through the subjectivity of the camera. Inspired as a child rummaging through his parent's archive of pictures recounting stories of their youth, Karl discovered in photography an opportunity to explore the ways images persuade our perception of the past and by doing so, inform our experience of the future. Much like memory, photographs are inherently partial to the prejudices of perspective, describing the world enframed not just through the camera lens but through the moral lens of its author. Blurring the boundaries between what is fictive and factual. staged and sincere, About Time is a photographic essay in pursuit of personal myth, and a testament to the fallacy of 'truth' in photography.  Bio Karl Halliday is a photographer, curator and writer based between Naarm and Boorloo. Karl's work has been shown in exhibitions at leading photography institutions across the country, including in group shows at the Centre for Contemporary Photography and Monash Gallery of Art, and in a solo show at the Perth Centre for Photography. Karl's images have appeared in print magazines, including Popeye, Frankie and Brutus, as well as several online publications. In 2020, Karl self-published his debut editioned photobook 'Subjects: Selected Portraiture 2017-19". Well, what a shitstorm the last couple of weeks that was in the lab! From back to back public holidays to setting up the grandest of openings for @jacintaoaten All The Seasons (showing till Saturday!), chemical orders not being delivered, computer systems going down and then our NBN drops out when we get going again 🤪 Thank you so much to everyone of our customers patience with us! Last week WIP hosted the event of all events! Naarm photographer @jacintaoaten launched her Melbourne Fringe show 'All The Seasons' featuring photographs and joint performances spanning the past decade of her lenswork! Words from the artist, Jacinta - "Exhibiting my stage photography for the first time ever featuring live performances had been a dream of mine for years. So seeing my vision come to life of actually hosting a show with Naarm’s darlings of circus, burlesque and cabaret doing their acts from my featured prints meant so much to me. I truly couldn’t have done it without these power babes here, captured by @femmeplastic … @missbettiebombshell  @milohartill  @dalewoulddoit  @themme_fatale  @tashyorkinit  @anfractuous  @azcadelia_  @thatskylargirl  @bedenash  - THANK YOU for making the launch party so special. We created an immersive and vibrant space together; a special energy that I really think can only come from performing in the round. And y’all made it go off in the gallery space of @wip.lab  which was absolutely enhanced by the lighting genius of @ah_listen  and sound by Siiri and Dave.
