Championship season hits different for everyone
Athletes: the nerves are real. The pressure is real. And the people who love you most are trying to figure out how to help, even when it doesn't always land that way.
Parents: this one's for you.
This Sunday, May 3 at 7:30 PM Pacific I'm hosting a free live webinar. 30 minutes of real tools for how to show up for your athlete when the stakes are highest.
What to say after a bad race. How to manage your own nerves before they transfer to your kid. How to ask what they actually need instead of guessing.
Free. Live on Zoom. Link in bio to register.

I see it every weekend at races. Athletes who ran well, objectively well, and walked away unsatisfied.
That's not a problem to fix. That's a striver doing what strivers do.
But here's what I want every athlete to understand: happiness was never waiting for you at the finish line.
'I'll be happy when I run that time.' 'I'll be satisfied when I hit that mark.'
That's the arrival fallacy.
And it's one of the sneakiest traps in sport.
The dissatisfaction you feel after a good race doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It means you care. It means you're still hungry.
The race is a data point. Not a verdict.
The struggle, the striving, the not yet?
That is the whole point.

I hear it all the time from athletes:
'I don't care how this race goes.'
But they do care. And that's actually the right instinct.
The problem?
All that energy is going straight toward the one thing they can't control - the outcome.
Here's the truth: 'I don't care' isn't a mental strategy. It's armor. And it's costing you.
Real toughness is caring fully AND competing freely anyway.
Every competition is a rep at the hardest mental skill there is: full investment, zero attachment to the result.
That's not indifference. That's the mental game most athletes never train.
Care about how you show up. Let the outcome take care of itself.

This one meant a lot. So honored to share how we as coaches can better support our student athletes by providing them with bettee mental tools and the opportunities to practice using those tools.
The way you show up for them is so inspiring!
Emotions are like the weather
1) You cant change it
2) It doesn't serve you to stress or complain about it.
What does serve you?
To prepare for it.
If you want to learn more about building your mental toolbox this winter, so you can practice making space between your emotions and the actions you decide to take, you can DM me to learn more about my 1:1 coaching.
I have 2 spots left for the winter session.
I just did a long run in pouring rain.
Squeezed water out of my sleeves.
Socks squishing with every step.
No race on the calendar. No reason I had to be out there.
But that’s the thing about running:
Your success isn’t built on perfect days.
It’s built on consistency. On choosing the work.
On doing the thing even when it’s uncomfortable…
even when it’s ridiculous…
even when it feels a little bit stupid.
That’s the part that changes you.
That’s the part that builds you.

One foot from the TV, heart fully at the course.
State is just one scene in a bigger story, and I’m so proud of the way these athletes keep showing up.

When the nerves hit, remember: you’re the mountain, not the weather.
Conditions change.
You don’t.
Run grounded. Run brave.

The hay may be in the barn, but your story isn’t over.
State isn’t the ending. It’s one scene in the bigger movie of who you’re becoming.
Run this one with presence, gratitude, and trust in your story.

Met with Redmond XC today to talk mindset — a team already grounded in the kind of mental skills that carry you through a season’s toughest miles.
On my run beforehand, I came across nine downed trees on the Redmond Watershed trail. Each one slowed me down just long enough to remember: obstacles don’t mean stop; they mean reset, climb, continue.
Winter is one of the best times to lay your own mental foundation. If you’re ready to grow your mindset heading into the next season, let’s talk.
