In celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, Windward’s student affinity groups brought the community together for an exciting day of celebration and connection on May 8! The festivities began with an all-school assembly featuring a spirited K-Pop performance and an interactive panel discussion that had the community on its feet by the end. During lunch, students, faculty, and staff headed to Foley Field for games and community activities in the sunshine. Thank you to our incredible student leaders and volunteers for bringing this celebration to life!

We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Kaleo Knight and Hudson Hillin at last night’s prestigious Jerry Herman Awards. Representing Windward Theatre’s standout production of Urinetown, Kaleo and Hudson stood among the top tier of nominees in a massive field of talent featuring fifty Los Angeles high schools. Throughout the evening, they served as phenomenal ambassadors for the Windward program, captivating the audience with their stunning artistry and “mind-blowing” stage presence. Their recognition on such a grand stage is a direct reflection of their impeccable work ethic and an unbridled passion for the craft that is truly rare to witness. It was a profound honor to watch them bring their unique magic to the spotlight, and we couldn’t be prouder of the dedication and brilliance they continue to bring to our community. Please join us in applauding these two visionary performers on their incredible success!

Last night at the Jerry Herman Awards, the spotlight shone brightest on Windward Theatre’s own Kaleo Knight. In a stunning showcase of excellence within Los Angeles high school musical theatre, Kaleo was named Best Leading Actress for her powerhouse portrayal of Penelope Pennywise in the fall production of Urinetown. Standing out among talented nominees from fifty participating high schools, Kaleo was rightfully recognized for her immeasurable gifts and captivating stage presence. The atmosphere at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood shifted the moment Kaleo took the stage to perform “I’m Here” from the Broadway hit The Color Purple. Her performance was so profound and soul-stirring that it propelled all 1,000 attendees to leap from their seats in an uproarious standing ovation. What Kaleo possesses is the rare, transformative spark that dreams are built upon—a talent that does more than entertain; it changes lives. We are incredibly proud of all Kaleo has accomplished and the magic she is poised to share with the world. Her journey continues this June at the prestigious Jimmy Awards in New York City, where she will represent Windward Theatre on the national stage in this culminating celebration of student artistry. Kaleo is the true embodiment of the best of us, representing her community in the most beautiful and empowering way. We cannot wait to witness her journey unfold as she sets her sights on NYU this fall. New York, get ready—Kaleo Knight has arrived!

Still thinking about the incredible flavors from Taste of Windward Our community recently came together to celebrate the love of food across cultures—sharing dishes and traditions from our amazing Affinity Groups. From African American/Black and AAPI to Jewish, Nuestra Familia, Middle Eastern, Multiracial Family, and South Asian communities, every table reflected the richness of Windward. Thank you to everyone who shared. Events like this remind us that belonging can be built one bite at a time!

Today, 9th Grade English classes welcomed the Chaotique Company to perform portions of Romeo and Juliet. It was a lively and engaging way to bring Shakespeare off the page and onto the stage!
