Arthur Torrington CBE was born in Guyana and came to the UK as a teenager in the 60s. In 1996, Arthur and the late Sam King worked together to launch the Windrush Foundation – honouring the 50th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush to the UK.
Using National Lottery funding, the pair collected and shared real stories of the Windrush Generation across the UK, ensuring the legacies of Caribbean migrants who helped to rebuild Britain after WWII live on in our local communities today ✨
With thanks to Black Cultural Archives. #NationalLottery30 @TNLUK@HeritageFundUK@WindrushFoundation

That first arrival — the moment the Windrush Generation set foot in Britain — carried hope, pride, fear and determination all at once.
As we mark 30 years of the Windrush Foundation, we remember not only what was built, but what it took to arrive.
