It’s happened again… people are questioning my background in film, TV, theater, and dance. So here’s that clip again — and honestly, I never get tired of watching it. A little context: I auditioned for this. Ellen and tWitch did not know I was a plant in the audience, so when I jumped up and started dancing, their reactions were real. That’s what made it so much fun. And being on The Ellen Show? Awesome. Truly one of those wild, unforgettable showbiz moments. Also… if you watch closely, look at the young woman on my left. Casting directors are all over Instagram telling us: “Don’t use that background.” “Don’t use that reader.” “Fix your lighting.” “Fix your sound.” “Use real people.” Fine. Learn the rules. But let’s not forget something: after COVID, actors basically became the unpaid audition studio. We provide the camera. We provide the reader. We provide the lighting. We provide the sound. We provide the location. We provide the labor. And somehow we’re still being told there is only one “right” way to do it. I’m changing how I self tape. When it makes sense, I’m going to shoot auditions in real-life scenarios instead of standing in front of a dead backdrop pretending the world doesn’t exist. Not sloppy. Not lazy. Not amateur. Intentional. Cinematic. Actor-controlled. You still need to know your camera, sound, light, framing, and story. But once you know the craft, stop acting like the self tape police own your performance. I told my agent I’m doing this. He said: Sounds great. Actors: take control. Learn the rules.
