Ballroom is not just a scene or a trend.
It was created by Black and Latina trans women as a response to exclusion, as a way to build community, safety, and expression where none was given.
It’s important to say this clearly, especially as more people engage with it.
To be in this space also means to understand where it comes from, and to move with respect.
This week, with Trans Visibility, and in a moment where trans lives are still being questioned and politicized, it matters even more.
Ballroom has always been more than performance.
It’s community, it’s resistance, it’s survival, and celebration at the same time.
We keep building, but we don’t forget who built this first.
