I’ve left my Mother’s Day post to the 11th hour this year, because to be honest it’s a hard one. My daughter is pretty much all grown up and independent, a joy to see her healthy, happy and thriving of course, but a reminder my mothering days as I knew it have come to an end. And yes, I know, there’s still joy to unfold and my own life to live, I get it, but it still comes with so much emotion. In addition to that my own mum is declining rapidly. She has dementia (as does my dad) and her mothering as I’ve known it has also come to an end. And although she still knows us and tells us how much she loves us, I’m not sure how long we have. My mothering instincts to protect her now at this vulnerable stage of her life are like those I have for my daughter - fierce and unwavering. But sadly I live a 3 hour drive from my parents so supporting my sister who bears the weight of the care is limited at best. Now, my sister, well there’s a woman who deserves the most wonderful Mother’s Day.
So, happy mother’s day to my sister who I love and look up to like no other. She’s there for everyone (pictured with me in the last photo). The middle pic is one of only two photos of me as a baby I have with my mum. Fourth child syndrome, barely a photo…
Not a pity post at all, but one to say how I’m feeling today, how I’m sure many mothers of teens feel, and women whose mothers have passed or like mine declining in health and cognition. I’ll probably delete this tomorrow as I try not get too personal here.
