The longer I live with something I’ve written the more it means to me. Originally about all the things I missed in my last relationship, “1000 FPS” is now a reminder of all I have around me, all the love, all the people, all the moments, all the places I have to be thankful for. A song I wrote about regret and emptiness now makes me feel full and hopeful. I think Art should grow and morph depending on the needs of the consumer and the creator, and this song has definitely done that for me. #Virginia #virginiamusic #blueridgemountains #appalachia #shenandoah

My second record, “Stranger”, is out today. This process began three years ago when my life changed drastically. I was a stranger in my own life, my own skin, my relationships, all of it. Sometimes I felt like a ghost, others I felt like a wrecking ball. I moved to Nashville. I left Nashville. I was married. I left my marriage. I returned home. I lived with my dad. I found the bottom, I found a new depth of humility, and then I slowly and methodically began to climb out of the hole I alone had created. This record is my Saturn return. It’s the baggage of 29 mixed with the paradigm shift that is turning 30. I am not the man I was when I began this record and I don’t think it’s overdramatic to say this record helped heal me. It was messy, it was painful at times, and it caused me to address a lot of my actions that hurt people I loved. But I could not be more proud and grateful releasing this today. I have a good life and I have so many people to thank for that. I have art to thank for that. And I have fans, friends, and family that listen to my art to thank for my career. I’m getting emotional in the passenger seat of the truck heading to Richmond to play at a record store so I’m gonna put a pin in things. But short story long, I am happy. I am grateful. Last week my dad and I met up in Damascus VA to exchange some furniture I needed in Nashville. Naturally, we made a fishing trip out of it. Damascus and the surrounding mountains have always held a special place in my heart. I remember when I passed through while hiking the Appalachian Trail and I couldn’t believe Virginia held claim to an ecosystem as beautiful and particular as Grayson Highlands. That was over ten years ago and I’ve been going back ever since, these days it just happens to be with a fly rod in my hands. The final song of the “Black Snake Sessions” dropped today. It is a stripped down version of “The Bottom”. It’s funny, I wrote this song with the help of Kevin Daniel at the lowest point in my life. Now I’m releasing a simple new version of it and I am no longer at that point. I am happy and grateful for the distance I’ve traveled to be at this place. I’m so proud of these little barn recordings. This session was two microphones, Evan Hunsberger engineering, Vinny Buchanan filming, Bobby Holland mixing AND mastering, a black rat snake slithering, and lil ole me singing away in my dad’s barn back home in Virginia. I think this session is a testament to the power of making art with friends in places you love. I’m writing this over a cup of coffee in Damascus VA after two incredible days of fishing mountain streams. The last slide might be the most important, it is a wild brown trout I caught yesterday. The last of the “Black Snake Sessions” comes out Friday. I’ve loved releasing these songs and I look forward to sharing them on stage and off over the next few months. Shore Drive in Virginia Beach used to have a sign that said how many people di*d while driving down that road. I once did 113mph in my friend’s mom’s car. Needless to say I’m shocked and grateful to not be a statistic. That was the road I’d take home when I wanted the scenic route. On the off chance lacrosse practice was canceled, my best friend Garrett and I would take Shore Drive home just to soak up that little extra boost of freedom. These rides were punctuated by the smell of coastal pine and the sound of songs like “Read My Mind” blasting through my rinky dink speakers.
