Every Tuesday I am celebrating actors I love!
Today I am spotlighting William Mapother, a fellow native-Louisvillian who has made his mark in Hollywood. Perhaps best known for his creepy role of “Ethan” on the hit series LOST, William is an actor who always delves deep into his characters’ psyche to find what really makes them tick. This intense character work always makes him a joy to watch.
Now William shares some tips with you:
1. Find non-acting income doing work you can tolerate. Running out of money is the most common reason actors quit acting. And the longer you continue acting, the more likely you are to get your break.
2. Play in traffic- i.e., hang out with people who are proactive and productive. Cultivate and stay in touch with friends like that. It increases your chances of finding opportunities, aka getting lucky.
3. Work begets work. If a job/role doesn’t demean or endanger you, take even those that don’t pay. You’ll get the chance to work on your craft and meet people (see #2 above).
4. Your job is not acting – your job is finding a job. The work won’t come to you. Go find it. If you can’t find it, create it yourself. Shooting stories for the screen has never been easier. You can do it! What are you waiting for? : )
