A British actor trained in theater, television, and film, Will Merrick has been able to build a solid, across-the-board career, eschewing the easy spotlight in favor of complex characters and measured acting. His best-known debut remains in Skins, the cult E4 series that earned him an RTS Award for best actor and a TV Choice Awards nomination. But it is in the subsequent run that Merrick has proven his versatility: from the comic role in Dead Pixels to the dystopian thriller Silo, where he plays Danny, via the crime series Bodies, Richard Curtis’s romantic comedy About Time, and a host of British and international productions, including Poldark, Doctor Who, and A Classic Horror Story.
Now he returns to the cinema with F1, the new film directed by Joseph Kosinski for Warner Bros. in which he plays Nickleby, a technical adviser alongside lead actor Brad Pitt, who is joined by Javier Bardem.
In this interview, Merrick talks about building the character of Nickleby, working on set alongside experienced performers, returning in the third season of Silo, and the weight, never quite exhausted, of the Skins experience. What emerges is a portrait of an actor who chose consistency over visibility, and who today reflects lucidly on the trajectories of his craft.
Will Merrick stars in this week’s Digital Cover.
