Balls of Steel is about living after cancer. When treatment may be over, but the impact is not. For many young men, survival brings silence, uncertainty, and pressure to carry on as if nothing has changed. This film focuses on that less visible part of the experience: how a young man learns to exist again in his body, how intimacy shifts, and how difficult it can be to speak honestly about fear and vulnerability. While raising awareness around testicular cancer is important, this is a character-led story about masculinity and the things men struggle to express, even to the people closest to them. Visually, the film commits fully to a medieval world despite being set in the present day. We are shooting on 35mm film to give the image texture and weight, using stone, firelight, fabric and steel to create something tangible and lived-in. The camera moves through the scale and ceremony of this environment, weaving through medieval grandeur until it finds small, human moments within it. At first, Tom feels out of place in this world. He doesn’t quite belong. Over time, the film observes what happens as he begins to inhabit it differently, and as the distance between appearance and inner reality starts to narrow.

Thought it was about time I shared some clips of our lovely short film “Picturesque”, that I directed and co-wrote with the wonderful @somewhatellie to reflect the visually impaired experience and inter-able love on screen. Still proud of our cast and crew, we slogged our guts out to make this in the gloriously wet and rainy Lake District. Please share far and wide 🎬 Starring: @somewhatellie as Mills @anjacilia as Rhea Producer: @harrywilliamtoddnorton D.O.P: @richardbelldop Sound Mixer/Boom Op: @leon.sound Sound Design: Dave Bartley Edit: @georgetheeditor And a host of very talented individuals who made it all happen.
