On the 10th anniversary of joining WHY’s interdisciplinary team of makers and thinkers and connecting people, culture, and place, the landscape architecture practice has evolved into WILDING X WHY!
By introducing elements of wildness and artistry into our lives, WILDING defines environments where communities can flourish and biodiversity thrives – whether in a park, a plaza, a house, or a cultural district. Led by Mark Thomann, the result is a holistic vision of health, resilience, wit, and creativity, where we live in close connection to the world around us.

Frank Gehry is a great mind and a brilliant designer. WILDING X WHY was humbled to restore the landscape at the Schnabel House, inspired by the grace of the Guggenheim for Bilbao’s public realm and watched with awe while teaching at Yale in the studio next to Gehry’s. Frank Gehry is a great mind and a brilliant designer.

Fun little creatures drawn by @wildingxwhy director, Mark Thomann. Not including these happy wee characters in the branding would've basically been illegal.

At the Kordansky Gallery, dark green “climbing fig” plants build a feeling of groundedness into the property.
With the additional plantings of cacti, blue chalk sticks, and African candelabra, this drought-resistant garden will sustain the activity of the courtyard space.

“I want the sky to land here, to cool it, and make it well again.” - Yoko Ono
Our collaboration with artist Yoko Ono and the City of Chicago created this unique installation in Jackson Park.

In Bilbao, the garden climbs the stairs, running in undulating lines of different textures and colors.
In one gesture, it narrates a story of landscape taking over and expanding over the Public Space and Architecture, therefore transforming the way that the stairs and the space is perceived and read by the user.
Designed in partnership with Balmori Associates.
