Sometimes I spend A LOT of time tweaking a pattern, then even MORE time deliberating over glass choices & color only to become discouraged and uninspired. That’s what happened here. I just couldn’t get it right. Or maybe I did and I just looked at it too long and lost the vision.
Other times I just muscle through and make the piece to get v1 out of my system knowing that will help me get to v2. This pattern was going to be (still might become?) a hanging vase/plant propagation station but time will tell if it’s meant to be.
Do any of these colorways call you? If so, which one?
Being self employed and a full time artist is not for the faint of heart. I am constantly judging myself and comparing my achievements and milestones (or lack thereof) to other artists I follow online. “Wow, they made *that*??” “They have X followers already?” “They’re selling that many pieces??” Or I find myself thinking back to when I had a more stable income but less flexibility or joy (i.e. life before glass). “Did I make the right decision?” “Is a glass career too risky?”
But then I have to remind myself that we are all on our own journeys and I am exactly where I should be right now. I took a fairly circuitous route to get to where I am now and a hugely important part of my life these days is being a parent. 2.5 years ago the business I was building came to a screeching halt when I developed Hyperemesis Gravidarum during my pregnancy. Then, after I had my beautiful baby, I did what I’d always hoped to do: take time off to raise her.
My daughter, Lumina, is everything I could’ve hoped for and more but that’s partially because of what I’ve decided to *not* do during these first few years of parenting. I feel so fortunate to have flexibility in my life (and work) to focus on raising her but flexibility comes at a cost. I have to accept that I can’t work around the clock to improve my skills and grow my customer base while also being available to drop everything at a moment’s notice to care for her. (I’m actually writing this as she sleeps in my arms, fighting her first big stomach bug 😩.)
Anyway, I just thought I’d share in case this resonates with anyone else. I’m an avid consumer of other people’s journeys online and I want to be more open about what’s going on in my corner of the world. I have A TON of hopes, goals, and dreams for myself, my glass business, and my family, and I hope I’m able to continue to navigate it all with as much grace (and not jealousy!) as possible. Do you ever struggle with feelings of inadequacy or jealousy?
