I design in colour. Loud, sometimes nonsensical, always fun. And then I get dressed and put on a basic shirt.
I find this funny and sometimes contradictory. The assumption I have heard often is that you make what you wear, that a designer’s wardrobe is a live advertisement for their brain. Mine isn’t. My work comes from somewhere else entirely: accumulated images, half-remembered things, a colour I saw in 2009 that I still haven’t let go of. When I make clothes, I’m not dressing myself. I’m dressing a thought.
What I actually wear is a different conversation. It’s quieter, more deliberate. It’s about the version of myself I want to show up as on a particular Tuesday, not who I am at my most unfiltered, but who I am when I’m trying.
There’s no contradiction there. I think there are just two separate wardrobes living in everyone: the one you’d build if no one was watching, and the one you actually open every morning.
I’m not sure what that makes me as a designer. Someone who makes things for the first wardrobe, probably. You can figure out which one you’re shopping from.
To have the courage to wear your thoughts out loud and in public is another conversation for another day. Meanwhile, I hope you show up every day as the version you want to show the world.
