F.G.S. * Interview by Asher Penn * Portrait by Dave Naz If you’re a Sex Magazine head, then you know who Flannery Silva is — half of the unclassifiable underground duo Odwalla1221 who were once described in these pages as “that very, very rare new thing that would be new in any time.” Emblematic of the twenty-teens, Odwalla’s influence still echoes through today’s art, fashion, design, film, and music. Somewhere along the way, the project went on a hiatus with Flannery and Chloé Maratta pursuing solo efforts: Chloé as Slipper, and Flannery as F.G.S. F.G.S. is a radical departure from Odwalla’s avant origins — romantic, country-tinged ballads in the singer-songwriter tradition. It might seem surprising if it didn’t hold so many of the touchstones of Flannery’s work: gut-punch lyrics, sincere vocal delivery, and point-blank femininity.
