Couples haircuts! Best hair on Helen + Koven, both with natural texture. Helen’s got silky mixed Asian hair with wave, enjoys shaggy length, an undercut that we’ve been reshaping from shaved to pixie and a micro bang with face framing layers that she can wear as a short shape, if she hides the back!
Koven’s got gorgeous bouncy curls on south Asian hair, recently celebrated a big birthday and was ready for some change, so I added even more layers, with a moveable part that he can toss around, with tons of movement to frame his face when wears it up or down, gorge!
thanks for always encouraging me to play, always so fun!

new chapter energy 💖💖💖
i went on my honeymoon and got obsessed w snorkeling and water got in my goggles so i trimmed my beard to help with that and then thought why not just shave it off when’s the last time i saw this face!!
🌀 and then i turned 40 🌀
and got a haircut to lean into this new moment.
at work i “graduated” from my last job and just started my new job 🚀🚀
a lot of things building up over months happening at the same time. writing more on all this in my next newsletter, excited to share 💖
9. surfing in maui with helen!
my first time going surfing :) noticing the patterns of the water, the body and the board and sitting and shifting weight and position affect how the board moves through the water even before you get up. where the water moves in and out towards the beach and using that to figure out where to paddle out and surf in.
and then that feeling when that energy of the ocean starts pushing you forward, you can’t see it but there’s a wave behind you, and you get this surge of momentum, and once you start moving it feels scary to stand up because then you’ll fall but you’ve fallen before and it’s okay you know how just trust it let go and stand up when you feel it’s right and then you’re flowing. the power of the ocean and you’re riding with the wave.
and just before kelly drew a spiral in the sand 🌀 how a storm thousands of miles away pulses and create waves in the ocean traveling further and further out, until this moment they’re reaching us. “when you’re surfing, you’re riding with the heartbeat of the storm”
a common metaphor for meditation is around the emotions or things that come to mind, imagine them as waves, they come big and they go, and you’re riding them, you’re surfing them. i got it in concept, but it was wonderful to surf and really feel that metaphor.
thanks so much kelly for teaching us!! @kellypottssurfer and @mauisurfergirls is incredible
in a week i turn 40, which is exciting and also a little overwhelming 😅🥰🎉 i realized i like to create ritual to recognize moments like this and make space for all the things that come up around it. so here is my drawing intention for it, on 2/22 a portal to 40
it’s been a joy finding labyrinths here!! this one came from eve’s recommendation - she designed the ones at sacred garden, we found just driving by.
walking this labyrinth i thought of the water and the wind and the earth all coming together here. it was beautiful to see the edges raised with green growth barrier between the paths and stones to mark edges.
you’d feel the sea spray from the waves hitting higher along the rocks, and the wind harder and pausing to catch your balance. it made me think of the strength that comes from plants and trees growing with the forces of wind.
and helen and i walking it together, wind for your gemini and water for your pisces 🌀🥰
bassoon and sax improv with aaron, playing alongside a cello drone note. it’s fun to hear the timbres of these two instruments together
thank u for showing me the bassoon and teaching me about this instrument @aaronsoloway 🎵🙏
8. Raymon teaching me balinese dance. i love the slow movements and sudden burst of activity, following along the music . the positions are precise and a good workout! and then channeling the intensity bringing it out in the eyes and movement. this was an earlier run, i missed recording the later run when we included the eyes.
thank u for teaching us raymon!!
7. making tayaki! kulveen taught me how to make tayaki during the holidays and gifted helen and i a cast iron tayaki maker 🎏🤩 it’s fun to play with different fillings and get a feel for how long to cook on each side - i’m still working on it 😅 helen and i made ones with almond butter, yogurt, and berries filling , super delicious 🤤
6. playing saxophone with tian, in a duo called bad sax
when you elongate the exhales the body relaxes, calming the nervous system, activating the vagus nerve. chanting or singing can help do this and i’ve found the saxophone does too, just by nature of playing it can be so many long exhales one after another. after we rehearse i feel a clarity and body high like i just went swimming, such a release and catharsis. i hadn’t played since middle school and tian hadn’t either and we picked this name to give permission to just jam and have fun like doodling but w sound 🎷🎷 @channeltian
5. learning the op-1 by teenage engineering with akhil, specifically sampling and looping. here is a clip from my recital.
thank you @kautripan@akhil.space for the lesson and for attending the performance @feministkiran@hakishots and helen for documenting my composition and performance 🙏
