I made my Nan a promise in 2020, in her words “so that if anything ever happens, you can always rely on yourself to achieve whatever it is your heart desires”
I didn’t know it would take 5 years to fulfill that promise 😂 A music degree that had one paper left paused turned into Te Tohu Paetahi then a full shift to finish my Bachelor of the Arts - Major in Te Reo Māori at Te whare Wānanga o Waikato. I like to think she knew all of what was to come, I was told not to leave my music degree so close to finishing for full immersion, I was asked how was I going to study with two kids, what was the point etc.
TĒNEI.
The realisation of tūpunas wildest dreams, a language brought back to my whānau, to my uri, conversations with my nan i te reo Māori, a tohu for all of my whānau who were told they shouldn’t or they couldn’t.
A single mom, diaspora, moved house 4 times lol signed divorce papers, worked full time, part-time, accepted every side quest, travelled the motu, broken, healing, grieving, loved and finding my way back home.
To my village, kore ngā kupu - for holding me together, āwhina, tautoko, checking my assignments 😂, staying up late with me, LOVING me when it felt impossible..
He mihi aroha ki a koutou katoa, he aroha mutunga kore.
