@caseymq ’s debut LP ‘Later that day, the day before, or the day before that’ is out now on
@ghostly ! Phew, so much to say about this one and far too few characters allowed here (I went way over the limit). Absolutely one of the best albums I’ve ever had the honor of mixing and I’m just so grateful to have been trusted with it. It’s truly something special. Doubly so, for me, as Casey is drawing from a laundry list of influences here, musical and otherwise, that have loomed large in my life as well – Joni, Debussy, late Talk Talk, Grouper, Anne Carson, Studio Ghibli, et al. He somehow weaves all these together with a Proustian thread: a deep inquiry into the imperfect nature of memory, the futility of total recall, and the insoluble dialectic between remembering and forgetting. I can think of few artists who can get this ambitious with theme and concept so effortlessly, or with such emotional immediacy, without any need for extra-musical justification. You just know it instantly. You’ve been here before. Or haven’t you? Was it years ago, or was it yesterday? Maybe it never really happened this way. That’s how I felt when I first pressed play, anyway, and I still do. I reckon you will, too.
P.S. Over the course of this project I kept coming back to this aphorism from Adorno: “We do not understand music — it understands us. This is as true for the musician as for the layman. When we think ourselves closest to it, it speaks to us and waits sad-eyed for us to answer.” Something to think about when giving this album a listen maybe.
