The logo on your Kappa trackies was never meant to exist.
In 1969, photographer Sergio Druetti was shooting a campaign for Beatrix Swimwear – a brand owned by the same parent company as Kappa – when his flash jammed. That error led to a series of photos of two models in silhouette, a man and a woman mirrored in pose.
Kappa founder Maurizio Vitale saw the image and pounced, plastering it across their athletic wear. This logo – which came to be known as the “Omini” emblem – stood out among the abstract icons of other sports brands, inferring both unity and the wearer’s individuality.
As the years passed, Kappa got creative: the repeating Omini logo spanned trouser legs and tracksuit arms as the company experimented with branding. Soon enough, Kappa’s Omini was covering football shirts and athletics kits, before bleeding into terrace, rave and hip-hop culture.
Today, Kappa is one of Italy’s most iconic sportswear brands – and its entire identity comes down to a camera malfunction.
