Byron has spent 7 years in the Air Force and underwent 36 war-related surgeries, but itâs the Fort Worth nativeâs 37th procedure thatâs making Texas history.
The veteran spoke with WFAAâs Richard Solomon on what led to him becoming the first person in Texas - and multiple other states - to receive a FDA-approved implantable heart defibrillator.

A new go-to concert venue in North Texas? Thatâs the plan in McKinney.
The $220 million, 20,000-seat Sunset Amphitheater is set to break ground near U.S. 75 and Texas 121 later this year. Colorado-based music venue company Notes Live is behind the venture, which will ultimately be home to one of the largest open-air covered amphitheaters in the country.
The goal, according to McKinney and Notes Live officials, would be to draw acts similar to Dallasâ Dos Equis Pavilion and American Airlines Center.
And what about when itâs 100 degrees during a Texas summer? The venue plans to feature temperature-controlled turf and an air flow system that will keep temps 20 degrees cooler in the venue than outside.
âYouâre going to be able to be in the worst of the heat in a comfortable environment,âMcKinney Mayor George Fuller said.
