One of our colleagues L. Vural Elibol was injured and taken to the hospital while photographing ICE agents making detentions at federal court in lower Manhattan today. Things got tense in an elevator bay. ICE agents were making to detentions, two women headed for deportation. Agents began clearing a perimeter, shoving journalist. @vuralelibol , who shoots for @anadoluagency , fell to the ground smashing his neck and head. He was reporting the news. On social media, Gov. Kathy Hochul accused the federal agents of abusing law-abiding immigrants and the reporters telling their stories.
“What the hell are we doing here?” she said in a post on X.
Tricia McLaughlin, spox for DHS, said that the building had been the target of threats, including a bomb threat and a menacing letter containing white powder. She added that the agency was on high alert after a sniper opened fire last week on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Dallas.
NYT best selling author and attorney, Philip K Howard, for WORLD Magazine. Howard has long been a proponent of government efficiency and cutting red tape — but for the purpose of advancing the industrial and progressive soul of our economy and country. Howard has taken a media lap in the past couple of months decrying the slashing and burning of career civil servants by the Trump administration, arguing it could do more to exacerbate inefficiency than to solve it. This is one of the many arrests happening each day inside the immigration courthouse in New York City.
Agents cover their faces with masks. They wait in the hallway before springing into action, grabbing migrants leaving routine hearings.
Carlos Javier Lopez Benitez, a 27-year-old from Paraguay, was one of their targets on July 16. He was in court seeking asylum. Despite a judge granting him a hearing in 2029,he was still detained.
After 2 weeks in detention, a federal judge ordered his release and he was greeted by his sisters, outside the same building.

Pisgah, NC rodeo. Lotta folks here for the love of the rodeo, a lotta them hoping to chase their dreams and qualify for a PBR run. Watching it in my old back yard in NC with loving friends made it all the better. Thanks for always driving me around @feedyoureyedesigns — even though I DD’d that night.
I am extremely fortunate for the two women in my life, @natfiacco and Chicken, our cat. They keep me sane, warm, and challenge me to be a petter person. They put up with my antics, particularly Nat. Thank you, you are one of a kind :)
From a photo project in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. The Lehigh Valley has one of the highest rates of registered independent voters per capita in the U.S. The valley is also central to US History, has seen an economic decline and population loss over the past two decades, to be replaced and filled by a growing number of Latino residents. These new residents have set up business, contributed tax dollars, and also tend to skew Republican, confusing ideas about immigrants and how they vote. The townships in the valley are a melting pot of political ideology, culture, race and class. I spoke with Dems who voted against Fetterman and Republicans who voted against Mastriano. At the state fair: On one side of the fair grounds was the local GOP booth, on the other side, the Democratic committee. Both party heads had full time jobs in their communities. They scrambled back and forth, spying to see which booth had more visitors. The pig race and beauty pageant honestly drew more than both.
