The EU just pushed the Deportations Regulation forward—centrists teamed up with the far-right. Now it’s in trilogues, and everything will be moving fast. But some EU governments are uneasy about copying an ICE-style system here. What can YOU do? 🫵 Pressure your national representatives NOW. Don’t let them fast-track a deportation machine behind closed doors. Share this. Call them out. 🛑

Today they voted, abstained and some even stayed home. In addition to the right-wing coalition that pushed through ICE-style deportations, some members of Renew and Socialists abstained and even voted for this law. By doing so, they left the fate of undocumented people in Europe in the hands of the far-right.  Share this post 👥 Our only option is to take action and pressure our governments to change course.  We keep us safe—not police, prisons or borders.

Seguimos luchando contra la implementación del Reglamento de "Retorno", aka, Reglamento para la perfilación r4ci4l y la deportación. Es decir, el ICE de la UE. Haciéndonos eco de la campaña de @WeKeep_UsSafe , os comunicamos que la última reunión del diálogo tripartito está prevista para el 20 de mayo. A partir de entonces, tendrá lugar una votación en la Comisión LIBE el 8 de junio y otra en el Pleno durante la semana del 15 de junio. Después, quedará aprobado para su obligatoria implementación en los Estados Miembros de la UE. Ya os contamos en publicaciones anteriores no solo cómo, sino también que debemos seguir enviando correos electrónicos a los representantes del Estado español en el Parlamento Europeo, y debemos seguir haciéndolo antes de la reunión del diálogo tripartito. #NoalICEenlaUE

The EU is trying to pass a law that would legalise so-called ‘return hubs’. These are actually offshore deportation prisons! Our UN Advocacy coordinator Kirsten was representing BVMN at the International Migration Review Forum this year. This is only the second that the Forum is convening - this time at the UN Headquarters in New York. Kirsten spoke to different stakeholders about how the new EU Return Regulation, especially with its more recent far-right-minded amendments, fly in the face of the commitments made by European member states as part of the Global Compact for Migration.

The EU is currently negotiating the final text for the Deportations Regulation, the most controversial being "return hubs". "Return hubs" are essentially prisons outside of the EU for governments to deport migrants to, where they remain in horrible conditions. Learn more in our explainer ☝🏿☝🏿☝🏿

For people on the move trapped in detention, violence, and exploitation, there is no free choice. These EU and Italy-funded programs pressure people into returning to unsafe conditions, violating the right to #non-refoulment, while enabling Europe to externalize its borders beyond the #Mediterranean.
