Next year, @weijia will be the first woman of color to serve as President of @the_whca .
But her story begins in an unexpected small town — and she took @vladduthierscbs back home to share the emotional journey to reaching her dreams.
@goldhouseco
Congratulations to our very own @weijia , who was chosen by her colleagues to be the president of the @whca .
“As the first woman of color to take on this role, I will do my part to ensure that I’m not the last,” she tweeted in thanks to her colleagues.
Last Saturday, the evening started with joy. For all the mixed feelings people had going into the WHCD, I saw excitement and anticipation for a night that I had spent months planning. I hoped we would find some unity by the end of it. Turns out we did.
When loud noises pierced the ballroom, I thought maybe it was protestors or the Howard University drumline. I brought them as a surprise for the crowd to start the program, but they would never get a chance to perform. The award winners and scholars did not get a chance to be recognized. We didn’t get to laugh along with Oz.
But we did get to put the importance of the First Amendment on full display by keeping the public informed. And we did get to go home to our loved ones thanks to law enforcement officials who sprang into action. We are grateful.
I am personally grateful too, for the outpouring of support and kindness from so many of you. Thank you. ❤️
After the stage of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was evacuated, CBS News’ @weijia says she “was watching the monitors and keeping my eyes” on her family in the crowd from backstage as she tried to get more information on what was happening to keep the guests trapped in the ballroom informed.
In a call with CBS News’ @weijia , President Trump said European allies can “come and grab” oil if they want it, as gas prices in Europe have surged more than 70% since the war with Iran began. The president also said he's not ready "quite yet" to abandon efforts to force Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping traffic.
On Tuesday, President Trump posted on Truth Social that countries that can’t get fuel because of the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz should build up courage and fight for themselves.
So, CBS News Senior White House Correspondent Weijia Jang called him up to ask him about it.
The night before this picture was taken, Luther texted right after his plane had landed in Anaheim from San Francisco. “Be there in 20!” He snuck into the hotel room quietly since the kids were already asleep, and we woke up to a full day with Lightning McQueen and Mickey. In another universe, this day would have been unthinkably different. “The happiest place on earth” is wherever my family is. Thank God for the hard working air traffic controllers keeping us safe despite tough conditions 🙏🏼
President Trump told CBS News’ @weijia during a phone interview that he believes the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran is “very far ahead of schedule” and “very complete, pretty much.” Weijia Jiang shares more details of that call with the president.
President Trump told CBS News’ @weijia that he believes the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran is “very far ahead of schedule.”
“I think the war is very complete, pretty much,” he said. “They have no navy, no communications, they’ve got no air force. Their missiles are down to a scatter. Their drones are being blown up all over the place, including their manufacturing of drones. If you look, they have nothing left. There’s nothing left in a military sense.”
Congratulations to all of this year’s @whnpa winners! Seeing their celebrated work reminded me what an honor it was to emcee the awards dinner last fall, among so many colleagues turned friends. Photographers really are the eyes of history, and they often capture parts of the story that the rest of us miss. And thanks to the legend @nytmills for letting me be his intern for the day 😂
