What started out as a concept render is finally coming to life with support from @cityoftrailbc !
This was project was a collaboration with Year 2 @selkirkcollegedfab students as part of a course in computer aided design and rapid prototyping. Stacking Lumens showcases the ability for digital technologies, specifically 3D printing, to play a creative role in decentralizing access to modern public art in rural communities.
The 6ft tall installation can be seen in Gyro Park in Spring 2026!

Had so much fun leading @selkirkcollegedfab students through a clay 3D printing workshop. Each student developed a unique digital design in Rhino software. Our goal was to explore forms and geometries that arenāt possible in traditional ceramic making.
Tradition wasnāt lost, though. Conventional hand-building and post-processing techniques were still essential to the final pieces.
The workshop reinforced an important idea: digital tools donāt replace craft. Students paired up to design 3D printable keychains ā but for each other ā learning how to conduct interviews, uncover user needs, and translate this into new designs that serve purpose.
We wrapped up with a tour of the Selkirk Technology Access Centre (STAC) and research lab, where students saw how empathy plays a vital role in designing, innovating, and manufacturing.

Iām reflecting on how fortunate we are to enjoy these mountains and how that privilege came at a grave expense to others.
