The latest iteration of The Estate has landed and it brings together a considered selection of twentieth‑ and twenty‑first‑century design, where material intelligence and authorship quietly lead. This late autumn’s offering moves fluidly between Scandinavian restraint and more expressive post‑modern forms, united by clarity of intention and lasting usefulness. Highlights include a number of iconic names in architecture and design, such as: Alvar Aalto’s model 611 dining chairs, exemplary of Artek’s human‑centred modernism, alongside sculptural contemporary seating by David Trubridge. Italian post‑modernism appears in Ettore Sottsass’s Westside sofa, its geometry softened by lived comfort, while Peter Ghyczy’s Garden Egg chair reflects a moment when experimentation met domestic optimism. The selection is anchored by refined decorative and functional works, from Royal Copenhagen Aluminia porcelain to modular McKay Design furniture. Together, these pieces form a coherent narrative of design thinking across decades — collected not for trend, but for presence, proportion, and enduring character. The Estate is our fortnightly online auction for those who love the hunt—curated furniture, design, antiques and collectables chosen for character, longevity, and quiet quality. All lots are on view at our Mount Eden gallery; with bidding closing online every second Tuesday from 8pm. 15—19 May The Estate | Online Auction Bidding Open + On View Callum Johnstone | Specialist, The Estate [email protected] | +64 22 097 7524 33a Normanby Rd, Mt Eden webbs.co.nz

Last night, @normanbyfinewines hosted an exceptional evening in the magnificent @webbsauctions Gallery, celebrating the arrival of @veuveclicquot La Grande Dame 2018 Limited Edition by @simon_porte_jacquemus Guests explored a remarkable lineup of La Grande Dame vintages, each expressing the depth, elegance and evolution of one of Champagne’s most recognised prestige cuvées. From the energy and generosity of the 2018 release, through the poise of the 2015s, the layered complexity of the 2012s and finally the extraordinary 2008 served from Magnum, the tasting offered a rare journey through time, terroir and craftsmanship. Each wine was thoughtfully matched with a bespoke menu designed to highlight the individuality of every cuvée — from sesame-seared tuna with La Grande Dame 2015, to harissa lamb fillet skewers with La Grande Dame Rosé 2012, finishing with Brie de Meaux and Comté St Antoine alongside La Grande Dame 2008 Magnum. Hosted by our Director of Wine, Liz Wheadon, the evening also explored the Jacquemus collaboration and the modern spirit behind this iconic Champagne. A truly special evening shared with wonderful guests, exceptional food and some extraordinary bottles. Thank you to everyone who joined us at Webb’s Gallery for this memorable Normanby experience.

Two concurrent exhibitions at Webb’s Wellington bring together contemporary Māori artists from across Te Ika-a-Māui, presenting bodies of work that move between making, memory, and the continuity of knowledge across generations. In the south gallery, father and daughter Brigham Anderson (Ngāti Hauiti) and Atarangi Anderson (Te Aitanga a Hauiti, Ngāti Hauiti) present work connected through whakapapa and material knowledge. Brigham’s tukutuku-based sculptures extend traditional patterns into grounded, disciplined forms that carry teachings of balance and responsibility, while Atarangi, as a kiriaute practitioner, has a methodology that centres the concept of non-linear time, encompassing connections between people and trees, fostering a sense of reciprocity and balance. In the north gallery, Maija Stephens (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Rangi) and Elena Rei (Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāruahine, Ngāti Koata, Sāmoa) present Wātea, a body of work that reflects on rituals of whakawātea — cleansing and release — as a means of restoring balance in unsettled times. Drawing on photography and weaving, their works are conceived as offerings for personal altars or tūāhū, imbued with karakia and elemental forces, and moving between the terrestrial and the celestial. Webb’s Wellington Gallery offers an exciting calendar of selling exhibitions, complementary to the touring auction previews. These exhibitions allow collectors to purchase the works on display immediately, making them a perfect opportunity for art enthusiasts to invest in unique pieces created by established and emerging artists. 12.05.26—06.06.26 Kia whakatā —Take a Breath: Brigham & Atarangi Anderson and Wātea: Maija Stephens & Elena Rei — Selling Exhibitions Purchase Online | webbs.co.nz On View, Wellington | 23 Marion St, Te Aro Virginia Woods-Jack | Exhibitions Manager [email protected] | +64 22 679 8664

Now on view at our Mount Eden Gallery is a considered grouping of works from the Material Culture Live Auction. This is an opportunity to engage directly with objects that speak to histories of making, movement, and meaning across Aotearoa, the Pacific, and beyond. This catalogue brings together material culture spanning continents and centuries, with a particular emphasis on the traditions of Aotearoa and the wider Pacific. Led by significant works including a rare taxidermy huia and an 18th century pounamu mere, the selection reflects objects shaped by relationships between people and land, and by the transmission of knowledge across generations. Alongside these are works such as a carved waka hoe with kōwhaiwhai design and a finely worked paddle from the Austral Islands, extending a shared language of navigation, status, and exchange. The result is a grouping that foregrounds material as active and relational—objects not fixed in the past, but continuing to carry presence, memory, and connection. This iteration of The Estate brings together a considered selection of design, decorative arts, and everyday objects, shaped by material curiosity and a pleasure in the unexpected. This sale moves comfortably between modernist clarity and softer, more personal forms, with a notable concentration of designer seating, studio glass, and mid-century furniture. Highlights include lighting by Eileen Gray and John Britten, as well as a strong run of contemporary and vintage seating from David Shaw, Vico Magistretti, Gordon Guillaumier, and Ligne Roset. Alongside these are five pieces of Garry Nash glass, a focused group of Keith Murray Wedgwood, and an especially strong offering of Len Castle ceramics. Basketry, outdoor objects, and playful design punctuate the sale, creating balance and rhythm throughout. The Estate invites close looking, rewarding those drawn to objects with presence, provenance, and enduring character. 1—5 May The Estate | Online Auction Bidding Open + On View Callum Johnstone | Specialist, The Estate [email protected] | +64 22 097 7524 33a Normanby Rd, Mt Eden webbs.co.nz

The Material Culture Live Auction catalogue brings together a considered group of works that trace the movement of objects across time, geography, and meaning. Anchored in the cultural landscapes of Aotearoa and the wider Pacific—alongside works from China, Persia, and West Africa—the selection reflects material as a bearer of knowledge, status, and memory. Among the highlights is a rare taxidermy huia, an evocative presence that speaks to both cultural significance and ecological loss. A finely worked 18th century pounamu mere, and a carved waka hoe adorned with kōwhaiwhai, embody the enduring status of pounamu and the deep genealogical narratives embedded in Māori material culture. From the Austral Islands, a ceremonial paddle extends this language of movement and symbolism across the Pacific. These works exist within systems of exchange: between maker and environment, ancestor and descendant, function and meaning. Materials—pounamu, wood, fibre, clay—are culturally charged with narratives and knowledge. Rather than presenting a fixed past, this catalogue invites reflection on material culture as active and relational: objects shaped by encounter, continuity, and change. Our Material Culture Live Auction catalogue is now available online and is on view at our Mount Eden Gallery from 2—11 May.
