Happy Cinco de Mayo! Celebrating Cinco with Consuelo “Chelo “ Gonzalez Amezcuá @webbgallery @webbsfairandsquare in the high Desert of Chihuahua! Chelo Gonzalez Amezcua born in Piedras Negras, Mexico in 1903 to parents who were teachers from Monclova, Mexico. On Thanksgiving Day at the age of 10, her family moved to Del Rio. She was the youngest of 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls. Her family has always had many ties to Texas with her Mother’s baptism at the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio and her grandfather was a pioneer Brackettville, Texas ranchman. Chelo says of her family: ”My parents were poor, but they always tried to create happiness for us. They played the guitar and sang with joy. This family of mine took care of me as if I were something special to them. I did not play with other children, my family was enough. I used to sit under the trees by the San Felipe River where I went to swim and watch nature, especially birds. My father and mother told me stories, and my dear sister Zare, who took special care of me, sang to me and was the inspiration of many of my musical compositions. I was always a dreamer, and I am still painting my dream visions.” Chelo was artistic and lived it. She was spiritual and believed in spirituality and past lives. She was a visual artist and poet. She worked as the candy lady at the Kress department store in Del Rio. We met her old Kress manager one time when he visited our gallery and expressed her immense talent in arrangement. At the end of most work days she would work an additional 3-5 hours on her artwork. She felt ball point pens had many advantages and needed no special technique for use, thus they were her chosen medium on most pieces. The world in which Chelo created through her artwork was a beautiful place filled with magic, mysticism and wonderment. She passed in 1975 at the age of 72, but before her passing she was the first woman to receive an exhibit at the McNay Art Institute in San Antonio in 1968#cheloamezcua #psychadelicart

Tim Kerr has spent his entire life promoting creativity in all of us and honoring those who have used creativity to make positive changes to our world through music, literature and civil rights. We’ve known Tim and honored Tim and his own contributions to our world for a long time. He and Beth are chosen family. So recently I sent Tim a few questions as I updated his page on our Webbsite. Tim’s consistent work in art, music and living always astounds me. Love you @movetk Link to his page in bio @webbgallery

It all started with Rev JL Hunter and our friend Sali. We had been collecting and dealing in handmade stuff, setting up at the Dallas monthly flea market and in 1987; Sali said we needed to meet the Hunters, JL & Ruby. That meeting and immediate love for the Hunters was something that changed our life trajectory. We spent most Mondays at their home hearing the Monday version of Rev Hunter’s Sunday sermon, sharing lunch, hearing tales, talking life and art. Art like we had never known it. We loved handmade objects but talking to the maker was something all together different to us, especially with the wisdom of Rev Hunter’s. What a soul!! Our friendship set us on a lifelong path of meeting artists and sharing art and stories of the artists. We have love everyday for Rev JL Hunter and his stellar steadfast wife Ruby. Happy birthday Rev Hunter! May you be sharing a little song wherever you are. Thank you for being born, being you and sharing your life force with us. ❤️

We heard about this banner for years. It was in an antique shop in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Folks would visit and tell their various stories of seeing the banner through the closed shop doors or shop owner John refusing to price it or mastering the distracting client act. John had a great shop and when you visited you knew this guy had the eye! It was a fun crap shoot shopping with him and his treasures. You never knew if you would really walk out with anything or just enjoy the banter with John. A big handful of years back we had an exhibit honoring his eye and sold his treasures. We bought the banner to keep the story going and damn it’s a great Fred Johnson piece.

Texas Independence Day is tomorrow as we enter back to Fort Davis where our souls are soothed. We are tight with the desert and will always work to preserve and care for the land, its distinctive plants, beautiful Rio Grande and all of its inhabitants human and wildlife. NO walls necessary NEVER EVER. As the world whirls like a hurricane, love and creativity are cream which always rises to the top which keeps us moving forward. We will be open most days during the first few weeks of March for all of the Spring Break travelers. Come by and rest your soul and lift your spirt. We open a great show of textile landscapes by @leighkvetko_art on Saturday March 14th 1-4pm with a short talk at 3 on using natural dyes and earth pigments. We have sweet sponsors in @wildcommonspirits . Please plan to join us. Guaranteed goodtimes to be had by all. @webbgallery #fortdavistexas

Thinking of the late Laredo, Texas artist Hector Alonzo Benavides 1952-2002 Benavides used to draw and paint anywhere from 10 to 15 hours per night. When seen in reproductions, Benavides’ work is often mistaken for woven fabric. He wove lines of ink into compositions using a strait edge to draw parallel lines, and crossing over them with more parallel lines which forms thousands of squares, which where then colored in using color combinations of the Mexican flag’s red, white and green and the Texas flag’s red, white, and blue colors. In the market in central Laredo one can find the Mexican saltio blankets hung out for sale to the tourists, with much the same colors that Benavides used in his drawings. Benavides was totally devoted to his art; and he boasted of being the most obsessive-compulsive person in the world. This can be felt in each piece, offering a view into the mind of this talented man, driven to create a world of his own, loaded with emotion, obsessive and compulsive energy. Benavides said, “Through my art, I have taken a negative and turned it into a positive”. #hectoralonzobenavides
