Since
@dejeonge workshop on Memory quilting, I’ve been doing a deep dive on jazz from the 1930s-1970s.
Slide 1 is of my memory quilt of Josephine Baker, iconic queer dancer, SWer, singer, and muse. Started this piece
@paintedbrideartcenter
During that deep dive I’ve been exploring sounds of Somali jazz and poetry, Cuban jazz from artists like Chano Pozo [slide 3], Sudanese Habibi Funk from Kamal Keila [slide 4] and modern Palestinian jazz.
It’s so important to remember and to go back to these archives. To allow them to guide us toward the future.
The future of freedom of movement (dance, migration, body) and liberation from these oppressive systems.
Music is where that liberation lives. #jazz #collage #freepalestine🇵🇸 #freesudan
