Repeated bursts of cold, moist air delivered heavy #snow to elevated parts of #Tasmania over the weekend, turning some areas into an early winter wonderland. ❄️ Here are some magical moments captured by our community: 1️⃣ Snow with a rainbow 🌈 at #CradleMountain National Park, captured by @_jessie.joelle . 2️⃣ Snow covered sheep in the Central Highlands, captured @tassieapplespice . 3️⃣ Snow at kunanyi/#MtWellington, captured by Steven. 4️⃣ Snow at #Miena, captured by @monicabailey.photography . 5️⃣ Snow at Miena, captured by @escapewiththebeurteauxs . 📷 Share your weather moments with us by tagging @weatherzone

A major bushfire in the Mount Lawson State Park near the NSW-Vic border has been seen producing pyrocumulus clouds. 📷 These photos by @satchandcogallery show the smoke and #pyrocumulus clouds, seen from Holbrook, NSW. This pyrocumulus cloud formed from intense #bushfire heat creating powerful updrafts. As hot, moisture-laden air rises and cools, it condenses into clouds directly above the fire. In the right conditions, these clouds can grow into pyrocumulonimbus storms that produce lightning ⚡️ and spark additional fires. #Weatherzone

Summer #snow settled on Tasmania’s Central Highlands on Sunday as a wintry air mass spread over the state in the wake of a cold front. ❄️ These stunning photos from @thisbellaidea show snow and #frost at #Miena, at the southern end of Great Lake. Cold air spread over #Tasmania on Sunday causing temperatures to plummet, with Hobart’s temperature hovering around 10°C at lunchtime as the top of kunanyi/Mount Wellington failed to reach 4°C. 🥶 But these cool winds that caused snow are also causing High fire danger ratings in the state’s east, where a number of fires continue to burn. 🔥 Wind and fire danger will ease over Tasmania on Tuesday as a high pressure system drifts across southeastern Australia. ⚠️ Be sure to check the forecasts and warnings for your area. #Weatherzone

The vast waters in Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre have turned pink! 🩷 These incredible photos were captured by Felicity Brown @chintachick at @chintaair . 👉 Swipe to the end to see the pink waters via satellite imagery! So, why has the lake turned pink? The ephemeral lake started filling with water back in May this year following heavy rain over Queensland in late summer and autumn. 🌧️ As the lake is endorheic, meaning it is a drainage basin that has no outlet, this water has been slowly evaporating over the past 6-7 months. Water evaporating from endorheic lakes like #LakeEyre cause the water’s salinity to increase. This heightened brine concentration causes and increase in certain types of bacteria and algae, which causes the colour of the water to appear pink. 🛰️ The large size of #KatiThandaLakeEyre has made its pink waters visible in satellite images captured from the edge of space, including the Himawari-9 satellite that sits around 36,000 km above the Earth’s surface. #Weatherzone

Parts of southeast #Queensland were hit with severe #hailstorms on Sunday and Monday. 🧊😱 Check out these photos of the giant hail from @nickgilpin in Brisbane on Monday, and @earthly.emma in Loganholme on Sunday. So, how do #hail stones become so big? Hail forms when raindrops are carried high into the sky by a #thunderstorm’s updraft. ⛈️ The hail grows larger when it collides with supercooled water droplets high in the storm cloud, which freeze onto the surface of the #hailstone and make it grow. Stronger thunderstorms have powerful updrafts that cause hailstones to rise and fall over and over, accumulating new layers of ice each time they lift into the cold upper-levels of the storm - that’s why you often see layers on a large hailstone resembling the rings inside an onion. Afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms are possible over the next three days from this Tuesday through to Thursday. ⚠️ The storms may be severe, so be sure to check the latest weather updates and warnings for your area. #Weatherzone

Check out this incredible shot of lightning by @withinblackandwhite in #Brisbane Qld on Sunday, October 26, 2025. ⚡️ This is likely a positive lightning strike, which is a rare type of lightning that originates from the top section of a #thunderstorm cloud and extends to the ground. ℹ️ #Positivelightning accounts for less than 5% of all strikes, and it is typically stronger than most other #lightning strikes. Have you ever seen this kind of lightning before? #weatherzone

Where did #Brisbane go this morning? 😶‍🌫️ @nicolasnaith captured this shot of the city largely hidden on Monday morning due to a late September #fog, caused by a combination of atmospheric conditions. ℹ️ Fog is formed when the air temperature falls to the dew point – the point to which the air must cool in order to produce condensation. The dew point temperature and air temperature were both hovering around 17 to 18°C in Brisbane early on Monday morning, which allowed the fog to form. While the likelihood of fog in Brisbane drops off significantly towards summer, it is still likely to occur nearly once on average each September. #Weatherzone
