For those new here: before WHEN existed as a platform, it existed as a question: What happens when underfunded lawsuits get the resources they need at critical moments?
“The Cost of Clarity” follows the lawsuit against AT&T over abandoned telecommunications cables in Lake Tahoe – and the coalition that pushed for, and achieved, accountability.
For us, it became an early proof of concept for our model, and a glimpse of what's possible through collective action.

North Richmond has spent decades living with the realities of pollution, contamination, and environmental burden. Yet even communities identified as disproportionately impacted are not always guaranteed timely cleanup, sufficient support, or protection from further harm.

Shared land, shared air, shared water mean shared responsibility.
To neighbor is a verb – an active choice to participate in and invest in the well-being of the people, communities, and ecosystems around us. It's a commitment to contributing rather than costing.
Where that commitment is weak or altogether absent, our campaigns help create the accountability critical to stopping harm and restoring harmony. Link in bio to learn more.
A company's reputation is predominantly measured by annual reports, stock prices, and earnings calls.
Since these figures rarely account for what surrounding communities absorb in return, companies can operate at the expense of people and wildlife with little repercussion.
Learn more about how the West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill is affecting the city of Richmond – and the opportunity Republic Services now has to become a better neighbor to the communities and ecosystems it depends on.
What if your donation didn't stop with one case?
For this edition of #FreshAirFridays, we're introducing our Pay-It-Forward Grant model – a way for recovered litigation funds to be reinvested into future campaigns.
Watch to see how it works, and keep an eye out for campaigns using this model (hint: CSPA's is one of them!).
These aren’t just environmental events. 🌧️
They’re financial risks. 📈
With every weather & climate disaster, businesses and supply chains are jeopardized. From 2016 to 2025, the U.S. experienced 202 such events – each causing over $1B in damages.
This is what climate risk looks like on a balance sheet – and why California’s SB 261 requires it to be disclosed.
Link in bio to support the campaign shaping how these rules are enforced.
Accountability starts with visibility. But when it comes to emissions, the full picture isn't always what gets disclosed.
For many companies, the majority of emissions happen across their value chain, well beyond the direct operations that reporting typically covers.
SB 253 is designed to bring the full picture into view. How complete that picture will be – and how durable the legal framework behind it is – are still being decided.
Now is the time to engage. Link in bio.
The law is one of the most effective tools we have to address harm – but only if imbalanced resources aren’t tipping the scales. ⚖️
WHEN taps into both the momentum of the litigation finance market and the power of crowdfunding to help rebalance the equation. This isn’t about profit (we’re a nonprofit, and many of our campaign partners are too). It’s about ensuring that the people, communities, and ecosystems facing harm have the resources to move their cases forward.
We’re focused on putting the law to work to make harm expensive and accountability real. And on International Law Day (yes, it’s a thing!), we invite you to be part of it.
What’s in this water isn’t a mystery – it’s been measured.
Monitoring data identifies a mix of hazardous chemicals in discharges from the West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill, with pathways into nearby waters connected to the San Francisco Bay.
Many of these substances are associated with increased risks to human health, from cancer and organ damage to neurological and developmental impacts. Risk increases with exposure over time.
You can support legal action requiring Republic Services to identify the sources of this contamination and ensure they're addressed. Link in bio.
Closed doesn't always mean contained.
The West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill stopped accepting waste years ago, but is still allegedly discharging polluted stormwater and leachate into surrounding waters.
Here’s how it's happening – and how you can help hold those responsible accountable. Link in bio for more details.
Outrage comes from knowing something is wrong, and not knowing what to do about it. Not knowing where to start, or what will actually make a difference.
That's why WHEN exists. We identify the specific legal and regulatory work that drives accountability. Then, you choose where to put your support and apply pressure where it counts.
If you've been waiting to act, our first two campaigns are now live. Links in bio.
