How to make an exciting dancefloor before the shots kick in.
What does a wedding photographer know about the party, it’s nothing to do with them, they just take photos.🤔
Maybe you’re right, or maybe the photographer is an active participant, an active observer of up to 100 wedding parties a year - maybe, just maybe they also have such a great relationship with their couples that they also get a debrief of what worked and what didn’t.
After shooting weddings for over 14 years here are some ingredients that work, they may not work for you, but not every wedding will be the same!
1. musicians & DJs come in all shapes and sounds, honestly some are cashing the cheque and moving on, some are treating your wedding like they’re headlining Tomorrowland, be picky, listen and find reviews if music and vibe are important.
2. First dances are awkward, but have your moment, just a minute unless you have a choreographed routine, then invite people up to finish out the first dance, this lures them onto the dancefloor for…
3/4. An energetic 2nd song, switch it up and go wild, everyone is on the dancefloor so they HAVE to join in right?!
5. You ARE the party, when you leave the dancefloor the guests will follow you.
6. It’s no good announcing the food 5 minutes after your first dance, it’ll take at least 30/45 minutes to fill the dancefloor back up, leave a decent gap, at least 30 minutes.
7. Trust the DJ the right one will match the energy, they will give breaks and build excitement, handing them a 7 hour playlist with ‘must-plays’ can be a tad restrictive. 😬
8. Irish exits are nothing new, but now it has a name, let’s guests slink off into the night without there being a receiving line on the dancefloor, as much as we all love a hug it’s not the one in the middle of a banger!
