2D Animation Planning on Forevergreen.
I enjoy planning my animation with a 2D pass first. Even as rough scribbles, it allows me to quickly iterate and have fun exploring different ideas before posing the character’s multiple controls in CG.
When posing in CG, I’ll often deviate from my 2D exploration as I consider it as another pass at refining, but for these shots, the CG pass stayed very close to my original poses with just slight timing adjustments.

Behind the scenes of the Minotaur animation from the Gyro and the Argonauts book trailer seen in my previous post.
The 2D animation was done almost all straight-ahead with exception of the dancing, singing, and huffing at the end, which was pose-to-pose.
Because of their intricate design (based on @anthony_holden ‘s beautiful book cover illustration) the horns were modeled and animated in CG (as seen in the short video).
The horns were modeled (very crudely) to appear as lines using a basic technique of culling the backface of a slightly larger outer geo. The horns were animated with attention to the spacing as not to feel like CG but hopefully integrate better with the 2D animation. Spheres were also animated as masks to cover the horns where the 2D animation would overlap the horns. Whatever I couldn’t mask or create with the model, I drew in after comp’d together.

Minotaur animation for the book trailer of “Gyro and The Argonauts” written by my friend, @zombietardis . Check out his IG for the full trailer and details of his book.
Josh and my other friends, @mikexroush (animated the cyclops) and @justinridgeart (animated Medusa), are all college buddies in the animation industry, and we vowed one day to work on something together. And we finally did it!
Due to its elaborate maze design, the Minotaur’s horns were crudely modeled then animated in CG (Maya), and everything else was animated in 2D (TV Paint).
The character designs for mythic creatures are based on the book cover, illustrated by the amazing @anthony_holden .
Had a fun time at the opening reception for the Ponyo exhibit at the @academymuseum . A true celebration of animation!
On display were some revision key drawings from Miyazaki that perfectly showcased the choices animators should make when breathing life into characters. The movement should always inform who the characters are, and the animator brings their human experiences and observations into the subtleties of their animation.
Aside from the mastery of Studio Ghibli on display, there were some great opportunities for fun including a hands-on stop motion station where guests could make their own stop motion replacement animation using sea creature cutouts provided by Studio Ghibli.
Congratulations @amyteikohomma and @nie_jess.77 on a wonderful exhibit!
There was much celebration at the @forevergreen_short_film wrap party last night, but one my favorite moments was when Lisa Spears and Julie Engelhardt, the wives of the directors Jeremy and Nathan, took the stage to thank the spouses who also donated their time for the film. They asked the spouses to stand so we could rightfully acknowledge and celebrate them.
Thank you @eren_unten for everything you do for our family and for always supporting me in my career. I love you so much. ❤️
After working on @forevergreen_short_film , I had the absolute pleasure in collaborating with @icreature to create a special zoetrope for the vinyl soundtrack album by @joshgarrels .
The animation designs are inspired by @icreature ‘s beautiful graphic art-style, seen in the film’s end-credit cards, soundtrack cover art, and vinyl center label.
Here’s a little behind-the-scenes video of early tests, figuring out the math involved for the zoetrope and the animation progression.
Check out the short film (available to view for 2 more days online) to see what inspired the vignettes seen in the zoetrope!

Collab between my wife @eren_unten and I. She did the illustration which I then animated for our @lightboxexpo announcement! Come visit us at Table 518 this weekend!

In today's #ForevergreenFriday, we're giving you an inside look at an actual demo that Head of Animation @wayne_unten made to help animators on our film walk through a few key animation principles from the Forevergreen show style guide—covering camera movement and character spacing that helped keep our character's movements fluid.
This guidance kept every shot cohesive, even with dozens of animators contributing, bringing a unified look and feel to the film.
