Art Week leads the way. Held for the first time in late January, the Week of Art Yucatán (WAY) takes its name from the Maya word uay, meaning surprise, joy, astonishment—or even sudden fright. The event brought together over 20 spaces, from galleries to independent initiatives like La Concordia at Mercado Lucas de Gálvez. It unfolded across three main venues: Salón Gallos in Mérida, a cinema-bar-art space in a repurposed factory; Plantel Matilde, Javier Marín’s concrete-and-water structure in Sac Chich; and Nepantla, a pop-up in a former henequen hacienda in Telchac Pueblo, now the studio of designer Angela Damman. “WAY is an art festival that showcases artists while building community,” says organiser José García Torres. “The aim was to resonate locally, and the response was strong.” The week also saw the opening of new spaces like Galería 25, founded by artist Trey Speegle to foster local collaboration. WAY coincided with other key events such as Art Weekend Guadalajara, leading into Mexico City’s art week around Zona Maco.
