Domes Beach in RincĂłn, Puerto Rico, can be extremely dangerous. Even on small days, powerful currents can pull swimmers and surfers toward the rocks â and multiple fatalities have occurred here.

This has been one of the most energetic seasons for the North Atlantic â from the massive Hurricane Erin swell to nonstop winter storm swells for Europe (some of which caused major damage in Portugal). Winter Storm Gianna in February also revived one of the most fickle surf spots in Puerto Rico.

Jobos Beach, Isabela is arguably one of Puerto Ricoâs most dangerous beaches for non-surfers.
Consistent waves and complex topography frequently generate a persistent vortex-like current systemâcapable of pulling beachgoers from seemingly calm water out to sea and straight into the surf zone.
In this simulation, Wavemaps numerical models reveal how these currents form. Colors represent current speed.
For decades, the true unsung heroes of Jobos have been the local surfersâperforming countless rescues and saving hundreds of lives.

The Atlantic hurricane season opens in 2.5 weeks. NOAAâs outlook favors El NiĂąo emerging through the summer â historically a brake on Atlantic activity, while the Pacific often wakes up in return. Weâll be watching.

This is why we love and hate statistics.
This spot almost never breaks like this. Depending on who you ask đ, it hadnât happened in 15, 20 years, maybe more. Then last month, it happened twice in one week on two different swells.
A good reminder that the ocean does not care about averages, recurrence intervals, or what is âsupposedâ to happen. Rare does not mean impossible.
This is exactly why long-term statistics should be used with caution, especially in the ocean. They matter, but they are never the whole story. Swell direction, period, local bathymetry, and wave transformation can line up in ways that produce something extraordinary â even when the odds say otherwise.
The ocean always has the final word. đĽ @rinconsurfvideos
