〈Cycle 1967〉
Cycle 1967. In this series, Zevs revisits David Hockney’s emblematic A Bigger Splash (1967) to pay homage to a year marked by social, cultural, political, and scientific milestones,an era suspended between triumphant modernity
and emerging disillusionment. Each painting borrows Hockney’s mise-en-scène, structured around a specific hour of the day, depicting the modernist villa and pool of Hockney’s Californian dreamscape now disrupted by a spreading black mass spill. This opaque form alludes to the Torrey Canyon oil spill, also in 1967, and its profound impact on society.
As an ode to Japan, the series introduces a recurring red circle that simultaneously references the Japanese flag and playfully recalls the 1967 logo of the French petroleum company Elf Aquitaine, today part of TotalEnergies. Once a symbol of energy and optimism, the logo now carries the weight of environmental scrutiny.
The pool surfaces also incorporate fragments
from Monet’s Nymphéas at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, creating a dialogue with the Impressionist master’s meditation on light and time. As in Monet’s work, each canvas corresponds to a particular moment
of the day—Veille 3h, Matin 7h, Matin calme 9h, Midi 12h, Déclin 15h, Coucher 18h, Crépuscule 20h, and Nuit 22h—structuring the series as a full daily cycle.
Zevs’s pool paintings are among his most collected works, found in major institutions and private collections across Europe, the United States, and Asia. They have been exhibited in significant venues such as
Galerie Rive Gauche in Paris (2015), Lazarides in London (2016), the MAMO Centre for Contemporary Art in Marseille (2021), and the Hangaram Art Museum
in Seoul (2023). It is both exciting and humbling to present these new works to a Japanese audience.
