This timelapse footage demonstrates the effect Water Artisans achieved for Joe and Laura Carey on their @addleshawgoddard Freedom to Flourish garden at Chelsea this year. Did you see it? They set us a challenge (which we love) and the result was superb! We collaborated with main contractor (and all round great team) @theoutdoorroom to build the watery bit. Laura headed up the planting - the garden won gold, best construction and best small garden! Hats off to @careygardendesignstudio and all involved.

No audio - listen to the bees! The raggy edge of the swimming pond (8 yrs old) showing just how important it is for wildlife. Filmed today, you can see the moss provides a perfect watering hole for the visiting bees. Then there is the cover provided by the Menyanthes, Mentha and emerging water lilies. Interestingly the tadpoles are out and about in the open water, and the emergents like Iris, Baumea, Alisma, Lythrum and Carex are all pushing up - perfect for dragonfly larvae in the summer when they climb out of the water to metamorphose.
A couple of other notes. We are noticing that swimming ponds improve with age, likely because the aquatic balance that is often talked about seems to reach an equilibrium after a good number of years, particularly if well maintained.
Phragmites has appeared and colonised one side of the pond. It’s a bit of a thug in this environment but we might see if we can confine it to a small area - just to keep some and to see how things go, as it also provides wonderful winter structure. It’s a privilege to see all of this and to be able to try new things 🙂

Classic semi formal swimming pond. Swim on one side, planty/wildlife fun on the other! A summer photo taken by Mike at @iophotography_uk . Great design by @matthewchildsdesign , it’s a cracker. Enjoy your Easter break, from all at Water Artisans 🙂

Water lily wonderland! Get ready for summer, these beauties will be waking up and working their way up to the surface to show off. Lilies are great for providing shade for in a pond too, if you have enough of them this helps to reduce algae growth by cutting down light levels and provide a little bit of cooling too 🙂

A project emerging out of the winter clag is starting to reveal some fun details. This design by @harrisbuggstudio uses lots of reclaimed materials, some won from site, and a few new materials to tone with the existing. Check out the blue lias paving with traditional pointing - love that. Swipe along, you’ll even see Rob smiling. It’s amazing what positivity some dry weather and sunshine can bring! Still lots to do but you can get a feel for what’s coming. Thanks to Rob, Toby, Ross, Bran and Alex on site too. Happy days.

Throwing back to @rhschelsea a good few years ago. We achieved this effect for Lilly Gomm on the Hillier Exhibit using OASE Mylar lace. It’s a super way to achieve a falling water style but minimising splash at the same time. We could watch this for hours, but you’d expect that in our line of work! 🙂 RAD Engineering made the steelwork for it after some collaborative head scratching and carefully considered design work!

How about a moment here, away from it all by the fire pit? Perch on a boulder, stoke the fire, share some good times and watch the stars come out. Just in case you think we've forgotten the water, the pool isn't far away! A Dorset landscape designed by Tom Massey, built by Water Artisans.

Waterfall at a flower show? Why not! Fun with Purbeck lumps a few years ago, bringing an @inspiredearthdesign design to life with @yorelanddesign - what fun we had! The waterfall was giving Timotei vibes!.. 💙🙂

I remember when all this was just (swimming) ponds! Remember the Kings Cross Pond Club? These two photos were taken 10 years apart, give or take a few months. It was only meant to be temporary but what if it could have stayed?…

Not exciting or pretty photos here but…
Yesterday was a good day. We’re investing heavily in our team with monthly training and away days. This month our good friend Simon Moore popped in to run through some pipe basics, things we think we know but listening to someone else talk with a lifetime of experience should never be passed up. We also covered aeration so we had plenty to take away and digest. Talking of digestion, Kat Keel from @n.ou.r.i.sh provided the most delicious and healthy lunch for us all - what a treat! There may have been muffins…
Knowledge = improvement so we’ll always strive for that! 🙂

We’re well on the road to Chelsea again and it’s not long now until the build starts. In the background we have been working with some super designers and build teams, finalising plans, trialling ideas, fabricating, procuring, sketching, plumbing, meeting, visiting, selecting and all of the other things that have to happen to bring these features to life. Remember this one? Joe from @careygardendesignstudio shot this video of the uppy downy water feature we engineered on their garden last year for @addleshawgoddard . The main garden build was undertaken by Mark, Fraser and the super @theoutdoorroom gang. Fun times 🙂
