Need a break from revision? ๐ Come join us for our Kahoot quiz night! Free pizza & prizes are up for grabs ๐๐
Find us in FAB 3.26 on Tuesday from 7-9pm. Looking forward to seeing everyone there! ๐
๐จ๐ข Come and join Warwick AI and Code Soc for a fun, chilled pub crawl in Leamington! ๐ป
There will be a pub crawl bingo along the way and it is a great way to meet some of the new exec for next year, so come along! ๐
๐จ๐ข Canopy Labs will be joining us tomorrow at Code Night to meet (and maybe hire!) students interested in AI!
They're an AI research startup based in London and San Francisco, focusing on Text-to-Speech and Language Modelling for real-time interactive avatars. You might know them from Orpheus, their state-of-the-art open-source TTS model. Check them out at https://canopylabs.ai/. ๐ค
Following a recent $17M raise, they're growing their research and engineering teams and want to connect with DCS students at Warwick!
Whether you're looking for a role or just curious about the space, this is a great chance to chat with the team at a fast-moving startup in a relaxed setting.
And there will be pizza! ๐
Looking forward to seeing you all there! ๐
Take part in the Apart AI Control Hackathon!
First place wins $1000, a fully funded trip to ControlConf, and an invitation to the Apart Fellowship!
Sign up for the Hackathon at: /sprints/ai-control-hackathon-2026-03-20-to-2026-03-22
Warwick Jam site: /gwinlryq
Then join the group chat: /DxQ4pPGk1KkLCcBSlhHqQ7?mode=gi_t
Hope to see some good results!
๐ข๐จ Did you know that the success of Machine Learning is largely a complete mystery? Even with the best theoreticians working on this problem, we still don't have a good understanding of how gradient descent works (and why it works so well!) ๐ค
Come along to next week's session where we'll explore the current popular topics being researched in Theoretical Machine Learning. The focus will be on understanding the broader field and the motivation behind theory research. Some sample topics:
- Implicit bias: what solutions does gradient descent prefer?
- Double Descent: can you have too many parameters?
- Grokking: when does a model begin to generalise?
- Two-Layer ReLU networks: the theoreticians go-to network.
- Laura's (Head of Education) Research: describing the solution space of sharpness regularisation.
Although the content sounds intense, the talk itself will be casual, interactive and for people of any mathematical / computer science background. There will be lots of pictures and a focus on intuition not complex math!
Looking forward to seeing you all there! ๐
๐ข๐จVoting is now open for the exec roles. โ
We have some great competition this year, so remember to vote for your favourites. โญ๏ธ
Voting will be open till 4pm Tuesday, where we will announce the results during our final code night of the term, so come along! (5pm to 7pm, MSB0.07) ๐ป ๐

๐ข๐จ It is the final day to nominate yourself for the WAI Exec elections!
We have a wide selection of roles, ranging across all manners of disciplines. Donโt worry about being super qualified for the role, we would rather have people who are enthusiastic and learn on the job. If you've ever thought about getting involved with WAI, now is your chance!
Nominations will close at 11:59pm today. Following this, voting will commence! ๐
You can nominate yourself for 3 roles (but hold only one role) so donโt be discouraged to run against any previous exec, be bold!
GRADIENT ASCENT T2 W8 :: CodeSoc x WAI โฐ๏ธ

We're really excited to see you all there - aiming to arrive at Social Climbing Coventry by 6:15pm.
๐ธ ยฃ8.50 entry with shoe rental, ยฃ3 sign-up fee if you've never been before.

๐จ๐ข Join us for the weekly Code Night this Tuesday. This is a perfect opportunity to relax and work on coursework! ๐ฌ โ๏ธ
In addition, this week is an opportunity to present your applications to become part of the exec team next year! ๐งโ๐ซ
Feel free to come along, we hope to see you all there! ๐
๐จ๐ข Have you heard someone say something along the lines of "neural networks adjust their weights in each iteration to minimise loss" but want to know more about how this is actually done? Are you left thinking phrases like "backpropagation" and "stochastic gradient descent" are magic incantations?
Come along to next week's session where we'll explain the underlying maths behind how NNs learn through backpropagation (simpler than you might think!) which will also unlock understanding of other key neural network concepts like:
- Why we have different activation functions
- Why the choice of loss function is important
- Variants of gradient descent (SGD, ADAM)
- How backpropagation influences how we initialise our weights
- Why neural networks are still black boxes even with this knowledge ๐ค๐ญ
We'll walk through all of this slowly and use concrete examples to help make things clearer. You don't need to have attended all of the previous sessions to attend this one and you will need a laptop to access the lab but you won't be writing any code yourself! ๐
It's that time of year again, election time!!! If you ever thought about getting involved with the society, nowโs the time. Want to help run some courses, help organise some projects, put together our annual summit; throw your hat in the ring!
We have a nice selection of roles, ranging across all manner of disciplines. And donโt worry about being super qualified for the role, we would rather have people who are enthusiastic and learn on the job.
Nominations (link below) will be open until 11:59am Tuesday 3rd March, with a chance to give a presentation to campaign yourself for a role(s) during codenight Tuesday 3rd March (5pm to 7pm, MB0.07) on which we will open voting online till 4pm on Tuesday 10th March and results will be announced during codenight same day (5pm to 7pm, MB0.07).
You can nominate yourself for 3 roles (but hold only one role), so donโt be discouraged to run against any previous exec, be bold!
