What does it mean to be a Black woman? I revisited the writings of bell hooks and Audre Lorde, listened to podcasts, and tried yet another time to read the Bible cover to cover. I considered the idea of the “strong Black woman,” and, by that token, the “Black woman savior” too busy saving the world to acknowledge that she, too, needs saving once in a while.
Then I sat with “Black girl magic,” wondering how I could expand on the notion. Black women are considered mothers, nurturers, protectors—but who nurtures and protects us? Could our superpower also be our greatest weakness? With these questions, I wrote the work’s first half.

W4RP Trio is a revolutionary ensemble that transcends musical boundaries with their eclectic fusion of classical, jazz, hip hop, country, funk, and many other musical languages. Their collaboration with the barbed and poetic lyricism of rapper LiKWUiD, Sermon of the MatriarK, released this year, is a towering conceptual work that strives to, as W4RP put it, “honor the strength and resilience of women across the Black diaspora.”
W4RP and LiKWUiD construct a propulsive and ominous sound that evokes Stravinsky-esque theatricality, fire and brimstone gospel music, rhythms from the worlds of contemporary minimalism and jazz, and grandiose hip-hop production.
