Very honored to share that my piano performance of “Ruby, My Dear” by Thelonious Monk was featured in the new @blknws film by Kahlil Joseph. Been a fan of Kahlil’s work since Until The Quiet Comes (truly one of the flyest music videos) through his work with Kendrick and Sampha. So having even a tiny part in this film, along with it being my first time hearing my music/seeing my name on the big screen made this a real moment for the books. Thanks to @groovycaleb for passing my name along and to Antonio Buyard, @name___date___ , and of course Kahlil for including me 🙏🏽 And thanks to @martasanchezpiano for helping me figure out how to approach this piece 💓

Second Wind is out now!! And happy birthday to me 🌬️🎂🌏🌳🪨🐣❤️‍🔥 There’s so much I could say about this album but put simply, it’s a return. Musically and spiritually ♾️ I started writing during my artist residency at @lamaisondebeaumont last spring, and my goal was to challenge myself to create longer form piano pieces and explore my compositional voice. As that experiment continued, conceptual themes began to make themselves known and before I knew it I was concocting a new album. I was reflecting on reconnecting with younger versions of myself and nurturing my inner child- that was a big one. Age, self-trust. Also, the feelings that came with being a black man from Harlem spending three weeks in a small village in the South of France. Lots of stuff swirling around. In the year and a half since then, so much has changed in my life and I’m grateful that I’ve had this growing body of work to process those experiences through. Apparently I’m in my Saturn return now so .. I don’t know what to make of that really, but this feels like a meaningful way to ring in a new season. This music has helped me so much and I hope it can do the same for someone else 🫂 Composed and Performed by yours truly 🎹 Artwork: @ezemdiakalonu Alt cover: @__dannyyoung and myself Guitar on ‘Compass’ and ‘Maybe’: @virtual_jon Cello on ‘Everything and Nothing’: @brennan.gerspach Mixing and Mastering: @virtual_jon Recorded at @lamaisondebeaumont in Beaumont-de-Pertuis, Provence, @shortstackny , and at Jon’s studio Thank you also to everyone who supported me through the making of this project. A few people I’d like to shout out are Nia, Ezemdi, Jazmin, Duval, Danny, Marta, Hugo, Jon, Geri and Norma. And so many others! It’s hard to pin down inspiration, but a few artists that definitely inspired this project I want to name are Duval Timothy, Keith Jarrett, Jason Moran and Thelonius Monk. I even realized after writing the song that Keith Jarrett has his own song named Le Mistral, which was a crazy moment of synchronicity. I’m really excited to hear about how this music is connecting with everyone so please reach out and share your feeling with me. Thanks for listening 🩵

Black History. Uncensored. Taught for the people, by Black NYC educators. ✊🏾📚
🧡 RSVP today — link in bio. Join congressional candidate and Bronx high school teacher Andre Easton and fellow Black educators for a powerful conversation marking 100 years of Black History Month and its revolutionary legacy the billionaires are trying to hide from us— plus a live showcase of Black artists and cultural workers 🎶🔥 Featuring BombaYo, Uptown Vinyl Supreme, Warner Meadows, Prometheus Brer, and Seth Sandoval. Food provided. This year marks a century of honoring Black History Month. But the true authors of that history are working people who didn’t wait to be handed freedom. Enslaved people carried out the first general strike in U.S. history, freeing themselves by joining the Union Army. Black workers, students, and organizers later dismantled Jim Crow through mass struggle, risking everything to defeat racist terror. Today, that history is under attack. As Trump-aligned politicians target schools and institutions, and establishment leaders offer symbolism instead of strategy, the question is urgent: Who will defend the truth? Who will organize to move it forward? The time is now to build independent, working-class power, and finish the unfinished work of freedom. ✊🏾

Last night we were proud to host the debut performance of Penumbra, a moving and expansive musical exploration created by Warner Meadows, Ezemdi Akalonu, and Andrew Javens. The performance doubled as a benefit concert, raising critical funds to send solar generators and panels to hospitals in Cuba so lifesaving care can continue despite Trump’s brutal oil blockade. You can’t blockade the sun! Drawing its name from the life and artistic legacy of Afro-Cuban painter Wifredo Lam, Penumbra seeks to illuminate and historicize the urgency of the current political moment through improvisation, poetry, and homage. This project carries forward the legacy of artists who have rooted their practice in collective struggle—artists who understand creation not as retreat, but as active participation in the fight for a world transformed for the better. You can still contribute to this urgent fundraising effort at letcubalive.info/donate.
