today I mourn the death of my oldest brother. I don't want condolences-I want a gentler world. He was not "weird" or "rain man" or "quirky" or "off"-he was a schizophrenic. he was a Marine Corps Vet, a college grad, funny, brilliant, talented, artistic, and tolerant of a world where people who don't know your story can be cruel & unkind. my wish is that we are more patient, less judgmental, & kinder to others-just bc someone looks "normal" does not mean s/he is not battling something. I was never embarrassed of him-I was proud of his small victories & grateful for learning Hendrix, the Beatles, & most of all empathy from him. thank you to my friends who were kind & inclusive, the police for always being gentle when he was unmedicated, & for the hundreds of strangers who looked out for him over the years. #mentalillness is real-we need to take care of each other.
