Scipio Africanus – Part 13 (Conflicting Realities)
In this episode, through 208 BC, as Scipio expands Rome’s grip over Hispania, it comes at a heavy cost, allowing Hasdrubal Barca to escape Iberia with his army and invade Italy. A decision that ignites political fury within the Senate, nearly costing Scipio his command and future career.
From there, we’ll briefly pivot to the events in Italy, culminating in the fateful Battle of the Metaurus, before returning to Scipio’s campaign, where his subordinates begin to shine, helping Rome seize two-thirds of Carthaginian Spain by the end of 207 BC, setting the stage for one final clash for full control of the peninsula.

This exceptionally well preserved Roman legionary helmet, discovered near Hebron, Israel, dates to the early 2nd century CE.
Robust in design and made of iron with bronze accents, this helmet was most likely worn by one of Rome’s famed heavy infantry.

Scipio Africanus – Part 12 (The Battle of Baecula)
In this episode, Scipio leads his forces deep into southern Hispania in 208 BC for his first great pitched battle.
Lured inland by Hasdrubal Barca, he turns the trap against his enemy, concealing the Roman approach before launching a daring, unorthodox attack that shatters the Carthaginian army holding an almost unassailable position.
The victory at the Battle of Baecula marking Scipio’s arrival as a preeminent commander, while breaking Carthage’s grip on southern Spain and access to its vital silver mines. Resulting in Scipio being hailed as a king by the Iberians, a title that triggered alarm in the Roman Senate.

Archimedes Directing the Defenses of Syracuse (1895, Thomas Ralph Spence)
An extraordinary depiction of Archimedes, the legendary Greek mathematician and inventor, defending his city of Syracuse against a Roman siege (214–212 BC).
Exactly as one would imagine, surrounded by machines and contraptions of war: catapults, cranes, and the fearsome “Claw” that could lift and capsize Roman ships.
A brilliant mind turned to desperate innovation.
One of the truly ingenious figures of antiquity, using intellect as his weapon to hold the might of Rome at bay for nearly two years.

🛡 The Testudo (Tortoise) 🛡
During a siege or city assault, as projectiles rained down from above, Roman soldiers could become a living fortress.
Although typically too rigid and slow for open battle, the Testudo formation, with shields locked above and all around, allowed them to advance toward the walls and gates of an enemy city under heavy fire.
This scene, carved on Trajan’s Column, vividly depicts Roman soldiers advancing in the testudo during an assault.
Slow. Disciplined. Inevitable.

Scipio Africanus – Part 11 (The Storming of Carthago Nova)
In this episode, we dive into Scipio’s meticulously planned and breathtaking assault of Carthago Nova in 209 BC.
Tracing his rapid ten-day march down the eastern coast of Iberia, with infantry, cavalry and fleet moving in perfect unison, before launching an exquisitely coordinated strike on the city.
Blending deception, precision and raw ferocity to achieve the unthinkable, capturing the jewel of Carthage’s Spanish dominion in a single day.
A stunning victory that Scipio immediately exploited through clever diplomacy to draw Iberian allies to Rome and begin dismantling Carthage’s power in Hispania.

Capua’s Fate: A Roman Lesson in Loyalty
Once the second most powerful city in Italy, Capua stood just behind Rome in wealth, prestige and influence. But after Rome’s catastrophic defeat at Cannae in 216 BC, Capua defected, allying itself with Hannibal and the Carthaginians at the height of the Second Punic War.
Rome never forgot that betrayal.
By 211 BC, the Republic responded with overwhelming force.
Three armies (60,000 troops) surrounded Capua, building miles of siege works to choke off the city from all aid or escape. Even Hannibal’s daring march on Rome couldn’t break the siege.
When Capua finally fell, Rome made an example of the city:
▪️ The city’s elites were rounded up and brutally executed
▪️ Their families were enslaved
▪️ Capua lost all political rights and was reduced to Roman Republic state property
It was one of the harshest reprisals in Roman history. Not just a punishment, but a clear message to all of Italy:
Betrayal would be met with total annihilation.

By 211 BC, Rome had lost its patience.
Capua, once the richest city in Italy after Rome, had betrayed the Republic by siding with Hannibal after the Battle of Cannae. That betrayal wouldn’t be forgotten.
Rome responded with overwhelming force.
🔻 Three armies. 60,000 troops.
🔻 Miles of siege works—ditches, palisades, ramparts.
🔻 Three Roman camps encircling the city like a noose.
Capua was cut off from all relief. No food. No reinforcements. Not even Hannibal himself could break the siege.
Capua was about to pay a terrible price for daring to challenge the Republic.
