Hollywood. Wow. I have to say that was one of the best treks I have ever done and the view was the best reward of all. The Hollywood sign, the wisdom tree and the sunsets were all inspirational and have sparked a huge amount of creativity. Since leaving university I have felt a bit lost and anxious for what the future holds but seeing these beautiful places makes all of those worries look stupid. I hope everyone has a moment like this and realises life is actually quite beautiful and worth living x . . . #danwaringphotography #losangeles #wisdomtree #hollywood #artistabroad

Lake District: Between Rain and Light Exploring atmosphere, movement and the shifting balance between shadow and illumination. It was a joy painting this commission and it is always an honour to be asked to do what I love most. Finding motion in something so immovable as mountains was a journey I really enjoyed, allowing the brighter colours to peer through the glum British weather makes for exciting contrasts in a painting and so the landscape of the Lake District is a perfect subject. . . . #danwaringart #landscapeart #britishcontemporaryart #contemporarylondonartist #lakedistrictuk

For so long I’ve only ever played piano when nobody is around but I asked myself what’s the point in making music if nobody is going to hear it! So here goes my first improv on the internet! I felt inspired as I was going through seaside photos from my time in LA and so I decided to capture where that took me. I’d be very interested to know what you see when you close your eyes and listen to it! There’s no wrong answers and I’d be honoured to have any of your thoughts in the comments below. . . . #danwaringmusic #filmcomposer #improv #pianoinspiration #seascape

A snippet of a great week in Devon over my birthday. Bantham beach always reminds me of childhood holidays and so it was really special going back. Cuddles with the dog (who also did a 5hr disappearance…) lots of photography, swimming and laughs. The sea always comforts me and sparks my creativity so hopefully once a new studio is sorted I can resume my practice as per normal!! . . . #danwaringphotography #bantham #devon #kingsbridge #seaside #fields #inspo #memories #childhood

University has been a huge challenge for me. I’ve been shut down, insulted and left feeling unsure about what I create and why. But what I have learned (admittedly the hard way) is that these experiences shape what we do and most importantly how we turn out. Getting myself through the past three years has taught me many lessons about not only my practice but about me as an individual and as an artist, just through sheer grit and determination which I didn’t know I had. I also learned not to make work to please others but for myself as that’s where the soul of the work lies. I lost my spark last year as a lot was going on and it affected my hunger to create art. But having a focus point of the degree show this year made me focus and work harder than ever to push through and get over the finish line. I am grateful to every one of you who has helped encourage and support me on my journey, particularly over the last three difficult years. Your immensely kind words have enabled me to make it past this course and now more excitingly BEYOND! It really does show how encouragement and love gets you anywhere you want to go. . In this video I compiled all of the work I have done this academic year alongside a piece of music I wrote a while ago called ‘Nature in Harmony’. Whether you found university a great difficulty or you are currently struggling to motivate yourself, I hope this post inspires you even just a little bit to just keep going and believing in what you are doing. . . . #danwaringart #auditoryvisions #university #oilpainting #natureinharmony #determination

Resonant Ember This was the final painting I did for my degree show. After many different phases and layers of paint I came to this exciting glowing horizon line, rather similar to the flat line of this drone throughout my audio piece. I wanted to represent those quiet undertones that we don’t hear unless we really concentrate. Red has sinister and ominous undertones which is reflected in this audio piece. The layers of skin this painting holds reminds me of all the choices I made along the way and how I got to the end of my degree show. Yes each painting has many many layers but ‘Resonant Ember’ is particularly poignant for me in this context as the canvas has been with me throughout the whole year, growing and developing as was I throughout my final year at university. . . . #danwaringart #resonantember #kingstonschoolofart #londonartist #oilpainting #auditoryvisions #ksa #soundart

Sonic Blur This painting is representative of that hazy buzz which isn’t quite silent but not quite loud enough to define. It’s blurry, unclear and unknown and so painting that feeling was a challenge. This is the third painting for my Auditory Visions exhibition (closing today) and it was done in the space of 4 days. That last minute rush to get a painting done encouraged fast brush strokes and rapid scraping application and distribution of paint which lends itself to the nature of the sound I was trying to visualise. When your in my exhibition space for long enough listening to this piece the painting almost starts to move. This is because of the hidden frequencies I’ve put into this section of the sound piece which are designed to put you on edge, heightening that fight or flight feeling. . . . Blue Sonance Sonance is an archaic word for sound or resonance and I felt it represented this painting rather well. This piece took me around a month to finish as it is one of my biggest paintings yet stretching out at 150x150cm. I added sand not only for its sonic patterns it can sometimes create but also its textural properties which adds depth to the final image. Blue Sonance was a joy to work on as working to a bigger scale allows me to fully express myself as a painter without having to worry about the tiny details. Being able to do this was important for me when working on this painting as part of my project is expressing how sound and noise makes me feel and so being restricted on a smaller scale wouldn’t have worked or been as impactful. The bottom half of the piece is left to take its own course as I let it drip and dry allowing it to form its own shapes while the top half is very controlled and deliberate. I find mixing two styles of painting in one a fascinating experiment. Again this is part of my Auditory Visions exhibition as part of the degree show and it touches yet again upon my theme of how sound and art intersect. This segment of the audio piece I made for the show was recorded conversations from both family and out and about in the streets of London. I collated plenty of sounds along the way and designed my own to layer on top and this is what I came up with. Again touching on my experiences of sound and being overwhelmed, this painting with its varying sonic personalities alongside my audio kindles the conversation on what it’s like to be overwhelmed by sound and how we process and survive that feeling. . . . #danwaringart #bluesonance #auditoryvisions #degreeshow2025 #soundandart #paintingwithsound #mixedmedia #abstractart #contemporarypainting #soundoverload #sensoryexperience #auditoryprocessing #kingstonschoolofart

Green Echoes This is the first piece I completed for my Auditory Visions collection, now showing at my degree show. It reflects the calmer qualities of sound in the looping sound piece I composed (also playing in the enclosed space). Green was the first colour that came to mind—then the shapes followed. Letting the paint drip and move on its own was exciting, especially as it began forming patterns that reminded me of a forest. Some darker, more sinister moments in the sound piece are echoed in the edgier, shadowed parts of this painting. As part of my dissertation was discovering a link between Auditory Processing Disorder (something I’ve had to learn to live with throughout my life) sound/music and visual art, my Auditory Visions degree show allowed me to demonstrate how I perceive the complex personalities found within sound. Th The Kingston School of Art degree show runs until 13 June—if you’re nearby, do drop by, it would be lovely to see you. The other paintings I’ll be posting soon also respond directly to this sound piece and its diverse sonic palette, so stay tuned. . . . Sunset on Barnes Common. . Painting this went through many phases and intriguing stages. At first I wanted to create an exact replica of the landscape I know so well but then frustration kicked in and that’s when the knives came out (palette knives don’t worry guys). I scraped away to get this texture which in a way mimicked the haziness of the incredible sunset kissing the tops of the trees. Looking at my painting now makes me miss dog walks with my beautiful dog Barley who is now a mother of 6 gorgeous little golden retriever pups. She’ll be back next week thankfully! . It will be exhibited in Putney School of Art and Design summer exhibition running from 6th June - 1st July incase any of you are interested in coming seeing not only this piece but all of the other amazing pieces by other students of @putney_schoolofartanddesign Hopefully see you then! Updates of my degree show is underway I’ve just been so busy and unable to keep up to date on social media! . . . #danwaringart #artistinlondon #barnesartist #putneyschoolofart #putneyartists #kingstonstudent #ksa #barnescommon #landscapepainting
