[Beyond the cocoon]
Can documentaries change anything?
Can documentaries affect others to a certain extent?
It is a problem that I have been thinking about, questioning and exploring.
It has been nearly two years since the shooting of the material. During the Spring Festival this year in China, I released ABOUT THE PINK COCOON to the protagonists (my family) separately. I got a lot of unexpected reactions and feedback, but they were positive, touching and thought-provoking. After watching it, they began to discuss, began to reflect, and began to love each other more. Myself and the people I love, and some unexpected instinctive reactions that moved me very deeply... To some extent, this link also forms a positive closed loop for me and the completion of this short film.
After watching, my sister posted on her WeChat Moments:
Seeing you burst into tears as you watched me being wheeled into the operating theater, I was amazed by the perceptive abilities of a 1-year-old baby. 😭
Now I can proudly say that someone cared so much about my painful experience of giving birth that they cried. Childbirth is never something that women are supposed to go through as a matter of course.
Thank you, my dear daughter!
Thank you, my brother, for capturing such precious moments!

About the Pink Cocoon was selected for the most pioneering documentary film festival in Asia - 🇰🇷 DMZ Docs, which will be Asia premiere in Docufiction program. I have always been curious and longed to go to this film festival located in the Demilitarized Zone of North Korea and South Korea.
Review from DMZ:
"Set within a delivery room painted entirely in pink, About the Pink Cocoon unfolds as a four-generation chronicle of painful family memories. Even before giving birth, the mother sleeps, exhausted as if by decree. With the arrival of the child comes a dual inheritance: the miracle of life, and the weight of societal expectations. This is a story of the gentleness, secrecy, intimacy, and solidarity that define a woman’s world. It traces a lineage of quiet struggle passed down through generations, while questioning the persistent machinery of exclusion and injustice.
Director Wang Binyu, trained in photography, applies a photographic methodology to his first short film. He employs a distinct color palette, juxtaposing pink with green to evoke an atmosphere where the sacred and the painful coexist. This sensory world is deepened by its sound design—fetal heartbeats, whispers of wind, the patter of rain—creating an uncanny and deeply immersive experience."
From Sept. 12 to 16, see u in Gaoyang!

Between spirit, memory, and rebellion—this is a portrait of a woman unafraid to unravel.
AS LIGHT AS FEATHER WE ARE 🇨🇳

As she prepared to graduate film school, Fei began making a film about her own experience of spirit possession. But what started as performance became something deeper. Old memories resurfaced—of family, lost love, grief, and leaving. With the camera rolling, she confronts it all: confusion, defiance, surrender. Through the act of creating, Fei carves her own path through the weight of contemporary Chinese womanhood—and the unbearable lightness of being.
