Where’s Urmilla? - When the Internet Stops Being Just Online Is the impact of cyberbullying not real? Are those hate-filled comments we casually type out, just words floating on the internet? They’re not. And they never were. What begins online doesn’t stay there. Sometimes it stays in someone’s head long after the screen’s gone dark. For queer and trans youth, often just trying to express themselves online, those words hit differently. “Where’s Urmilla?”, a short film by Conscious Cut, directed by Rayyan Monkey, holds up a mirror to that truth in a way that’s sharp and emotional without saying too much. The film opens in a space full of joy and colour, but that feeling doesn’t last. What starts out light quickly shifts, and through visuals alone, it shows how easily joy can be interrupted when you’re visibly queer online. The kind of hate you can’t always report. The kind that sticks. The weight of the film sits in the quiet moments that follow. The film leaves space to feel the emotions without spelling it out, reflecting the very real silence around cyberbullying, its impact on Trans/ Enby folks and the people we’ve lost on the way. This isn’t fiction for drama’s sake, it’s rooted in reality. From Pranshu’s tragic suicide after being bullied for wearing a saree in a reel, to everyday stories of queer youth receiving rape threats, being misgendered, or emotionally shattered by comment sections, “Where’s Urmilla?” brings all of that into a frame we can’t scroll past. Created by @rayyanmonkey (writer-director-producer), Prabhanshi Pandey, Akshit Bahri, Devna Das, and Bristisnata Dutta, the film stars @glorious_luna , @boniiiiiiiiita , @wanda_a_hendricks , and @46anerjee ; queer artists whose lived experiences lend rawness to every frame. This film is a reminder that cyberbullying has real-world consequences. And that some people don’t just log off, they disappear. It's the third time I've made it to PRIDE March. In three years so much has changed and so much more will change by next year. I'm so glad @wanda_a_hendricks has been constant. It's great to have your chosen family be here. When all else keeps changing. It's good to have my Skateboard to ground me while everything else is transitioning. I'm so glad @dhroouimeel suggested the skateboard the night before. The skateboard is me at me freest, and the PRIDE March is all of us at our freest. It's been beautiful to be able to walk this March annually. With some of the same faces, and also as part of the official pride photography and Filmmaking team with @fatsmeagol This pride march was the smallest I have experienced in my queer baby years. Mainly because of the unexpected delay and also being placed on a Friday. We all heard from friends at after parties, just how they couldn't make it because of work. In that reality of this March it was surely the one attended by privileged few who could still leave everything and make it. Yet this time so much else had changed. To begin with never have I seen these many proud parents of queers attending PRIDE in such numbers. And it made my heart melt with hope, joy and jealousy. Yes all at once, that's how we are. All at once kinda people. Even if the numbers were less, the feels were still 100% authentic and free with pride. My outfit is the same from PRIDE March 2024 With @basicballofsunshine 's direction we got it reworked into a skirt. My hair also, like every pride was done by Nida It's nice when something don't change. Although @liactuallee Wasn't at the March, their hand made Watermelon earrings and bag gift, and 🏳️‍⚧️ accesories did make it.
