Our next film @texastheatre Monday, May 11: THE STAIRWAY TO THE DISTANT PAST. Tickets on sale now at link in bio.The second installment of Hayashiâs Maiku Hama trilogy spills out in vibrant, full-blown color as Maikuâs past resurfaces, setting in motion the events of this brooding and exquisitely shot sequel. Taking on puppy rescues during a slump in more weighty investigative work, Maiku hears word of the return of his long-lost mother who abandoned him and kid sister Akane years before. A legendary stripper named Lily-san, she sets up shop along the riverbanks of Yokohama where the presence of an enigmatic âMan in Whiteâ (Hiroshima Mon Amourâs Eiji Okada) begins to trouble both police and yakuza. Hayashiâs sequel lives and breathes the occupied history of the port city, its near-mythic riverfront still abiding by a postwar code of omertĂ . A remarkably emotive middle chapter, The Stairway to the Distant Past plunges Maiku into the darkest depths as he reconciles his past in its eerie final act, a nightmarish tableau vivant of painted faces and silent murmurs.

Monday, April 13 at 7:30PM: The Most Terrible Time In My Life
Tickets at link in bio! Only at @texastheatre
The first entry in Hayashiâs trilogy of films about the misadventures of detective Maiku Hama (his name a nod to Mickey Spillaneâs hard-boiled antihero), The Most Terrible Time in My Life finds the indefatigable Yokohama gumshoeâplayed with deadpan cool by Masatoshi Nagase (Mystery Train)âon the trail of a Taiwanese immigrantâs missing brother⊠and in the middle of a brutal gang war. Newly restored for the trilogyâs 30th anniversary, The Most Terrible Time in My Life is a stylized mashup of â40s American noir and early â60s Nikkatsu crime thrillers with an offbeat sense of humor all its own, shot in that seediest of formats, black-and-white widescreen, with Hama, who keeps his office in a rundown movie palace and drives a Nash Metropolitan with California plates, the apotheosis of the hipster-sleuth.
Catch all three films as part of our series programming!
â The Most Terrible Time in My Life: April 13

â The Trap: June 15
Wamono Nights is pleased to announce the next THREE films in its series (April, May, and June) at the @texastheatre : The Maiku Hama Trilogy (courtesy of the wonderful @kani.releasing ). Tickets at link in bio!
Launched to stardom by Jim Jarmuschâs Mystery Train, enigmatic actor Masatoshi Nagase thrives as the hardboiled detective wannabe Maiku Hama in Kaizo Hayashiâs trilogy of the same name, encompassing The Most Terrible Time in My Life (1994) (April 13), The Stairway to the Distant Past (1995) (May 11) and The Trap (1996) (June 15). Stomping through the bustling-and-hustling port city of Yokohama, Hama operates out of a run-down movie theatre and his office sees every kind of customer: from rich ladies looking for runaway pups to serial murderers who look suspiciously like himself⊠Equal part American hardboiled detective pastiche, Seijun Suzuki-style Nikkatsu akushon send-up, and Masatoshi Nagaseâs own new school comedic charmer, the Maiku Hama Trilogy is a cult phenomena of 90s Japanese cinema, that would go on to inspire many â and spawn its own anthology NTV television series The Private Detective Mike by 2002.
