You don’t receive a limited edition personalised magnum in an edition of 250 pieces as a sample every day, at least I don’t.
@cantinagrattamacco did me this honour to celebrate the 40th vintage of their Grattamacco Bianco, one of the best Vermentinos coming from Toscana and I don’t say this lightly because most of it is not that exciting.
This definitely is, with grapes coming from massal selection of old vines on white clay and flysch soils and fermented one third in barriques and two thirds in stainless steel with six months on the lees is both refreshing and sleek and classy. And with Grattamacco one of the few taking the variety very seriously. I would age this for at least four years if it wasn’t for the fact that it is irresistible right now.

Walter's WoW: a non-alcoholic wine that’s a welcome alternative to mineral water and fruit juice, plus its lower-priced bargain alternative, Steinbock.
From €15.95 or £17.30, and €9.90, $11.99 or £12.25 for Steinbock.

More whites and lighter reds: the style of the moment on this volcano. Walter reports.

Simply stunning. There is no better end to a dinner than top class Marsala. It just makes ‘click’ in my brain and everything falls into place - my description of balance, I suppose.
Have it with aged pecorino sardo and walnuts.

One of the next generation Barolisti I am most impressed by is @vaira_aurelj run by brothers Giacomo and Francesco Vaira in tucked-away Vergne and with vineyards in Narzole that fall outside any MGA but which gives the two plenty of space and time to experiment.
A strict organic approach and working by gravity only in the cellar is part of the philosophy, but much more value the Vaira brothers attach to sustainability, which goes all the way through to staff and their wellbeing and hiring them on a full time rather than part time or seasonable basis because, rightly, they are seen as an asset rather than just a cost. This is pretty much unique but should be standard practice.
The first Barolo 2020 Fossati I have yet to taste but to judge from the 2024 Controcorrente, 100% Nebbiolo Rosè and 2023 Vinofuorizona with 30% whole bunch it’s bound to be stellar.
According to Giacomo Vinofuorizona is the most important wine because the vineyard due to a legal quirk lies just outside of the Barolo denomination, but it works in their advantage: ‘we are not constrained by a fixed idea or concept of how Barolo needs to be. We can make wine without having to adhere to a specific idea or dogma.’
Vaira Aurelj is imported by @beckywasserman.co into the USA and @elevagewines.uk .

A long-time wish came true yesterday when I had the immense pleasure of having Alberto and Alessandro Tasca d’Almerita show a vertical of Rosso del Conte. A legendary wine and the first ‘Super-Something’ of local and NOT French varieties and put on the market two years before the first commercial vintage of Sassicaia.
Tasca’s beautiful Grillo from the island of Mozia was a showstopper itself.

A beautiful Dogliani from the Pirochetta vineyard @cascinacorte and a proper Dolcetto in its complexity and with that unmistakeable sense of litheness only Dolcetto from Dogliani (and Ovada, the great unknown) can deliver. You can taste this and Cascina Corte’s Barolo from the MGA Perno, a tannic but beautifully perfumed wine for ageing at The Wines Experiences (the name needs a little work) in Excel - London. Thank you @luciana_8867 for pointing this gem out! And Cascina Corte is looking for an importer…

@drink_withlove is a little gem of a wine fair just a few steps away from Vinitaly with a host of exciting new and next generation producers.
Check out @steigerkalena making outstanding rosato in Molise (and some pretty nifty blends from Montepulciano, Aglianico and Tintilia), @mongarda.valdobbiadeneprosecco from Valpolicella making the first Brut and Extra Brut Prosecco Superiore that convinced me (most of these styles just taste like stripped off their fruit), @cerminara_fratelli_di_ciro the next generation of Cirò with a beautiful minerally Bianco and @kabajwines making archaic, true to tradition and variety wines that receive exceedingly long ageing from Brda.
There is much much more, but registration is essential. Don’t miss out on this one.
A truly unique, once-in-a-lifetime vertical of all 30 vintages of @michelechiarlo Barolo Cerequio all the way back to the very first 1988 of this majestic cru. (2024, 2014, 2008, 2002, 1994 and 1992 were not produced).
Thank you Very much for this hugely generous tasting, @stefanochiarlo and Alberto. Something to never forget.
